With Love, From Your Four-Pawed Best Friend

Are you ready for a pet? Here are some words of wisdom from some furry friends to help you decide.

Dear Master and Mistress,

Hey, it's me your “best friend.” I know that sometimes you get really busy with your life and you may even forget about me. But here are some bones on which you can chew about taking care of me:

  1. Please exercise me everyday or I get bored and become destructive.

  2. Take me to the park or just take me for a walk. Train me to walk on a leash and let me meet new people with your guidance. I like rides in the car and feeling the breeze on my face through a slightly opened window.

  3. Make sure I have plenty of fresh water throughout the day. I need water just like you. Make sure that it is fresh and not sitting around for days.

  5. Provide a clean and shady place for me to stay outside or a well- ventilated place inside.
  6. If you keep me in your yard, I need a clean area that is regularly maintained. I need you you to pick up my messes and to make sure that my area is safe and free from things that might injure me or make me sick. The same is true inside your house. I need to be given a safe place to stay while you are gone. I will eat anything and please keep this in mind when you leave me for the day.

  7. Take me for yearly check-ups. Find a veterinarian that you trust and take me for yearly physicals. My vet can be one of our best resources for keeping me happy and healthy.

  9. Make sure I am given up-to-date immunizations. I trust you to keep me well and free from diseases that are preventable with a simple shot. There are many pet clinics all over the place that offer discounted immunizations.

  11. Look into Pet Insurance in case my vet bills get too expensive. Insurances for pets are available and can be a blessing for a sudden expense that I face. You don't want to pick between keeping me alive but going into heavy debt or putting me down before I am ready to go. For $35 dollars a month, you can get some health coverage that might make difficult decisions economically easier to handle.

  13. Don't bring me home unless you intend to keep me. I may be cute, but I am a huge responsibility. The shelters are full of cute animals just like me who were given up. You need to really think about adopting me and do everything in your power to keep me. Please plan ahead and think about adding me to your family very carefully.

  15. I need obedience training and I need to know that you are in charge.
  16. I need to know basic commands and how to behave with you in public. I need time to learn what you expect of me and I need you to provide the time to make me an obedient pet. Give me some guidance and I will only want to please you.

  17. I am a pack animal, so include me in your family. It is my nature to be in a family unit. I want to sit next to you while you watch television or read the newspaper.
  18. I want to sleep next to your feet as you sit in your favorite chair. I like nestling up by the fire as you talk on your phone. I want to be near you and I want to be an important part of your family. Keeping me outside all the time and away from your family will only make me frustrated and I will probably bark a lot and or destroy things because I feel left out.

  19. Make sure you are feeding me the proper amount of food daily
  20. Read the package and see the recommended amount of food I should receive each day. Give me a few minutes to eat and then take my bowl away so you train me to eat when it is time. Don't leave my food lying around all day, as I will become a picky eater. Don't feed me too many treats either, as I will lose my appetite for my dinner just like you do when you eat too many snacks.

  21. Never hit, hurt or abuse me. Training me can be frustrating and I will make mistakes. But never take your anger out on me in a physical way. Read information and talk to my vet about my behaviors and how to handle them.
  22. I will never trust you if you hit me and I will try to defend myself by growling at you and maybe even biting you. I will use my instincts to keep me safe, even against you, if you turn against me.

  23. All the love you give me, will be returned to you ten fold. I will provide you with unconditional love through your good days and your bad days. I will be here when your children grow up and leave home and your friends are busy. I will love you more than I love myself. I will be your most loyal and trusted friend.

I Promise To:

  1. Always be happy to see you. Even when you have had a hard day, I will greet with a wag and a smile.

  3. Always listen and never interrupt you. Unlike people I won't interrupt you. I will always listen to you when it seems no one else is listening to you.

  5. Never lie, cheat or hold a grudge. These human traits are foreign to me and this makes me better than so many humans that practice these things in their daily lives.

  7. Always be easy to please and loyal. I am very basic in my needs and you don't have to spend tons of money or even much money to make me happy outside of my basic care. I just want to be with you, have food, water, shelter, safety and you as my friend.

  9. Never care if you are rich or poor, I will love you regardless. I will love you if you live frugally or lavishly. I will live with you in a simple home or a luxury mansion.
  10. Your status in life does not matter to me in the least. Who you are and how much money you make matters to your human friends, I don't care at all. I will still greet you with affection whether you lost your job or you won lotto. I am loyal always and this is why I am sometimes called “Man's Best Friend.”
