There is no doubt that cats are agile. They usually land on their feet whenever they jump or fall from a height. But with so much agility, why do cats still knock things over when they walk past objects that are in their path?
Are Cats Really Clumsy?
Many cat owners mistakenly believe that their cats are just clumsy and can't help the fact that they knocked over a photo frame, candle or ornament. But the truth of the matter is that many cats deliberately knock things over. If you doubt that your sweet little kitty would ever do such a thing on purpose, watch them and see what happens next time they try to traverse a window sill that is full of photo frames and other objects. While some cats will easily walk around objects that come in their path without knocking them over, other cats are craftier than that and will deliberately knock things over.
The Cats Are After Something
Have you recently bought a new bag of cat treats? Once your cats smell the cat treats, they will try to locate the bag. If it is located on a table, or you keep it beside you as you work in your home office, the cats will try again and again to knock it over so that they can make off with it. If you doubt that your docile, well behaved little cats would ever do this, watch them as they set to work and you will notice them extending a paw and deliberately trying to knock over cat treats or any other object that is of interest to them. That's not clumsiness. That is the result of a premeditated plan! Cats can hardly ask their owners that they want a cat treat. But if they can smell that there is a bag of cat treats nearby, they will just try and get hold of the bag themselves.
Play Time!
Kittens are especially playful and one of their motivations for knocking things over is because it is all a game to them, in much the same way that a toddler will throw a toy from their pushchair while it is motion, just so their parent can keep picking it up and returning it to them again and again. If you do not already spend a lot of time playing with your kitten, then it would be a good idea to start. Kittens will just get themselves into mischief if they so not have much stimulation. By knocking things over, they are playing a game and encouraging their owners to take part.
While it is not possible to know all of the reasons why cats knock things over, these are some of the most common reasons why cats knock over objects that they come across.
