The Top 10+ Reasons to Own a Cat

There are many benefits to being owned by your cat...

  1. Cats are Intuitive

They know instinctively when their humans need more attention or would like to be left alone. A cat will rub against your legs or jump in your lap for cuddling to take your mind off your problems. Rubbing a cat's silky soft fur is an excellent stress reliever.
  2. Cats are Playful

Dangling a yarn strand for your cat and watching as they chase the string can help keep human's from sitting in front of the television frozen for hours at a time. When the household cat decides to catch a mouse and puts it out of its misery that is also a plus.
  3. Cats are Entertaining

Watching my cat chase my Jack Russell/Chihuahua and then jump from his reach, when he turns to catch her is great fun. She will also hide in the bathroom and watch him through the crack of the door to see him round the corner looking for her. Then she will jump on the bathroom sink and pounce on his back as he runs by.
  4. Cats are Clean

Not only does she groom herself, but she grooms everyone else in the household too. She loves to sit on the dog, as he is attempting to nap, and give him a good washing. She lets you know when her kitty litter needs scooped, and has never missed the box.
  5. Cats are Smart

Not only does she know how to out wit the mice and the dog, but she is very intelligent about what to eat and not eat. She knows she is a carnivore. She is not like the dog and will not be tricked into eating unhealthy food.
  6. Cats are Good at Relationships

My dog will try and pester me into petting him whether I am in the mood or not. Not my cat. They instinctively know when to pester, and when not. She knows that she can jump in my lap, but she knows not to jump in my husband's. She knows who is receptive to cuddling, and who is not. They interact with humans in a way that is consistent with the human's behavior.
  7. Cats are Good at Teaching Children Empathy

Gail Melson, PhD states in his book Why the Wild Things Are: Animals in the Lives of Children “The Opportunities today children have to learn about nurturing others increasingly may be coming from the pets in their homes”. He quotes many studies that have been conducted showing higher social skills, sensitivity, interpersonal trust, and ability to nurture coming from those children who were raised with a cat or dog. The bond that takes place between a child and their pet is very special and assists them in their social growth, self esteem, and maturity.
  8. Cats are Agile

They have been known to fall out windows from seven floors and survive. They can leap and climb tall trees and usually find their way back down to safety.
  9. Cats are Good Hunters

Not only should the mouse beware, but also the cricket, frog, bird and various other creatures.
  10. They Have a Healing Purr

Paula Peterson interviewed the president of Fauna Communications Research Institute, Elizabeth Muggenthaler. Ms. Muggenthaler is a research scientist and a bio-acoustic specialist who has done studies on various animal sounds. Her findings are absolutely amazing, and demonstrate that the frequency of a cat's purring is good for healing muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones. It is also thought to be beneficial for other types of healing and stress relief. More information can be obtained from logging in at Fauna Communications Research Institute.
  11. They are Loyal

There have been many stories of cats that have tracked their human families down and joined them after being separated. There's a one liner that goes something like “A dog has an owner, but a cat has a staff” but it is not really that simple. There is lot more to a cat than its aloof reputation.

So next time your cat jumps in your lap and wants a little attention stop and think about what a wondrous creation a cat really is.

What a great article! I enjoyed every word. When I was a young girl in bed with the flu I would always take the cat to bed with me. I told mom Kitty made me feel better and now I know why. Very good article with lots of interesting information.

Thank you Darlene, and Lizzie for your comments. I am lucky that my cat and dog get along so well, just like a brother and sister, but the girl, my cat has the upper hand. They are precious.

Excellent article, good points.

Great Article!

I just recently got my cat back after having moved from a place where I couldn't have him. I was amazed that after so much time apart, he ran and leaped into my arms when he saw me. He is a skittish cat and will only approach people he knows and trusts so it was a relief to see that he still remembers me.

Cats are amazing and entertaining creatures!

#10 by Judy, Oct 25, 2007
Dear A. King, I am glad that you were able to get your cat back and that your reunion was so pleasant. I have had a soft spot for every cat I ever owned, and my current cat is not exception.
Kateapoet, You must be constantly entertained with four felines, but you will definitely have healthy bones and no mice. Lol.
Thanks to both of you for your comments.

Dominic, Could their purring ability be part of the reason they have 9 lives? The research findings feel that their purr is why they do not have the bone and arthritis problems their counterpart (dogs) do.

Thank you for the comment. Come back any time.

I can't decide between my cat and dog. I love them both in different ways, so I guess I'll keep them. LOL.

Thanks for the comment, Jen. I appreciate your reading my article.

#18 by Heart Stone, Nov 2, 2007
I'm fond with animals but I don't own a cat. yet, I do loved cat. Yesterday, when I was walking with a dog...I saw a huggable cat..., she seemed so sweet. She followed us wherever we went, so i thought she want to be with us. I wanted to get her but I don't want to be liable into something. She was really an adorable cat. What was amazing was that when she looked at me in the eyes. Very penetrating!!!

Good article!!!

Brooke, Mine is just a short haired domestic. Some people prefer to get
purebreds, but I am perfectly happy with my cat. Some of the other breeds can be somewhat temperamental.

Cats are a responsibility, but many refer to them as the "low maintenance" pet. Generally they do not have as many health problems as a dog might incur, and they will not chew up your shoes when they are small, nor do they have to be walked. I love both my dog and cat and would not want to part with either.

If you were to have a concern about your cat you could direct it to
vet@catfancy.com. A column is published monthly in Cat Fancy magazine. Good luck, Brooke. I do not think you would regret it.

I think that I will buy a female calico cat. I saw one at a pet shop named Isabelle. I might get her. Could you help me? I mean like what's the best ood and litter box and stuff. Please help.
#21 by Brooke, Nov 3, 2007
Last message i meant food! sorry!
#22 by Judy Sheldon, Nov 3, 2007
Brooke, I am glad to hear from you again. I stayed up all night trying to compile my very best tips for you, and will submit it just as soon as I can get it to download. My computer lost it at 5:00 a.m. and I am now trying desperately to retrieve all of my hard work.

Question 1 depends on your cat/kitten's age. Purina kitten chow is good for kittens. Purina also makes adult cat food. Cats should not get much table scraps.

Question 2 I find that a clumping (scoop able) kitty litter lasts a lot longer because the waste clumps and can be disposed of easier than having to discard a pan full of litter constantly.

Good luck. I know you will be happy.

Thank you!

Heart Stone, did you get your cat? It sounds like she may have been meant for you. I have never been sorry about owning a cat. Thank you for your comment.

Thank you, Simple. That is why I ask owners not to let their cats roam outside in my new article "Tips for Happy, Healthy Cats." Bird flu is nothing to ignore.
#27 by Beatrice Adams, Nov 4, 2007
I used to have a cat, and - at the risk of infuriating dog lovers - did find her easier to care for than my dog. My family won't let me keep cats now, though, because we have a history of asthma.

One more nice thing about cats: They're cheaper to feed than dogs, generally :)
#28 by Brooke, Nov 5, 2007
Well I might get her. I am a fan of cats. I read the Warrior Cat Books all the time. So I'll get her soon. Thanks for the tips!
#29 by Brooke, Nov 5, 2007
I heard that cats can help with stress. Is that true?
#30 by Bluestar, Nov 5, 2007
Hello? I'm Brooke's cousin. I'd like a kitten but not sure which one to get. Can you please help me?
#31 by Judy Sheldon, Nov 5, 2007
Brooke and Bluestar, Thank you for visiting me. I have a short haired domestic and we are quite happy with her. Did you read the other article that I put together, with you in mind, Brooke "Tips for a Happy Healthy Cat"? If I left anything out, that you need answered, let me know. I will try to help.
#32 by Brooke, Nov 6, 2007
Thanks for all of your help Judy! I got her and I just love her! Could you give me some tips? Thanks for everything!
#33 by Bluestar, Nov 6, 2007
OMG! Please help me! My cat is sick! My friend came over and gave her some pizza and now she's sick! Oh my poor Anna!
#34 by Judy Sheldon, Nov 6, 2007
Bluestar, I just got in from work and saw your comment. Is it your cat all right now? If not I hope you called a vet. Good luck with her and be careful with "people food". Cats are carnivores, and Icy Cucky wrote a good article about foods that should not be shared with your pets.
#35 by Brooke, Nov 8, 2007
Are you gonna help me with my cat?
#36 by Judy Sheldon, Nov 8, 2007
Brooke, did you read Tips for a Happy Healthy Cat, and if so still have questions? I also posted a site where you can post questions to a vet. You did not include in your comment what you need help on such as feeding, litter . .
I will be glad to help, if I can.
#37 by Brooke, Nov 9, 2007
Well I need help with like what's the best food and stuff. I got Isabelle toys and a bed. Well can you please help me? I will check out your article. Thanks!
#38 by Brooke, Nov 9, 2007
Hey, Judy. Can I join with this site help you with some tips? I know some tips and I'd love to help you. Please. Can I like add some of my tips to your tips up there? Please?
#39 by Sara, Nov 9, 2007
just a quick note that Gail Melson is a woman, so it would be "in her book..."

and also about #9. Though cats are naturally good hunters, their instincts should be exercised through play alone. House cats should not be let outside to hunt. They can easily harm wildlife such as song birds or small mammals and are the most distructive forces on natural ecosystems (and don't forget that its dangerous out there for cats too!)
#40 by Judy Sheldon, Nov 9, 2007
Thank you, Sara. The article quoting Gail,in Cat Fancy had a picture of a male holding a cat - sorry I should never assume. I agree with you 100% re the other item. I do not allow my cat outside, unless she is riding in the car with me. I advice against allowing cats outside. Read my other cat articles "Tips for a Happy Healthy Cat." I appreciate your taking time to read and comment.
#41 by Judy Sheldon, Nov 9, 2007
Brooke, thank you for visiting again. If you look to the bottom of the article, below the submit button, and under "Services" you can click on "submit an article". It should open a window where you can submit your own work for publication. It's easy, free, educational, and you get paid. Good luck.
#42 by Nick Kenney, Nov 11, 2007
BRAVO! We have 9 and wouldn't trade any of them for love nor money.
I didn't know about their purring being a healer...thanks!
#43 by Judy Sheldon (-Walker), Nov 11, 2007
Nick, thank you for your comments. I am glad you enjoy your cats. They bring us a lot of joy.
#44 by Brooke, Nov 11, 2007
Hey I'm back again! I'll add my comment soon! Thanks for letting me add one Judy!
#45 by Bluestar, Nov 11, 2007
Hey there Judy. It's me again. My cat is all better again. Thank you!
#46 by Judy Sheldon, Nov 11, 2007
Hi Brooke and Bluestar. I am glad to hear your cat has recovered. No more pizza, right?
#47 by Bluestar, Nov 12, 2007
Yep and that person that did is not allowed at my house anymore!
#48 by Brooke, Nov 12, 2007
Judy I can't add anything because I don't have an email address. So, I'm just gonna type it here!
#49 by Nightsky, Nov 12, 2007
Hello! I read your tips and they are awesome! I had a cat, but he died. I might get a new one. I'd like to chat with you guys!
#50 by Judy Sheldon (-Walker), Nov 12, 2007
Brooke, don't let that stop you. Mail boxes are free at yahoo, msn and google. You just have to answer a few questions, and they set you right up.

Nightsky, thank you for your comment. I'm sure you won't regret getting another cat.

Bluestar, good decision.

Talk to you later, I have to go to work.
#51 by Brooke, Nov 15, 2007
I might go make an email adress. I dunno. Well here is one tip: Don't let some cats be together. Some cats don't get along and they may fight each other. Plus, table food, like pizza, (no offence Bluestar) is unhealthy for cats to eat. So don't feed them that. And also, cats can help relieve stress. That is all I've got for today! I will have some more tomorrow!
#52 by Nightsky, Nov 15, 2007
Wow Brooke those are awesome tips! Thank you! Judy, would you help me? I don't know what type of cat to get next! Thanks all of you! Your tips are very helpful!
#53 by Brooke, Nov 15, 2007
Thank you Nightsky for your topic, and your welcome for the tips! Glad I could help! Um Judy, I have a question for you. How do you make a website? I mean like you did here? I'd like to make a website but not sure how to. Please help.
#54 by Brooke, Nov 16, 2007
Oh thank you for telling me that! I will make one soon. Is it safe? Does it cost money to sign up?
#55 by Judy Sheldon-Walker, Nov 16, 2007
Brooke, Triond needs to pay me for public relations because I talk so highly about them, and have recruited many writers and photographers for them. I have already received two pay checks and have only been writing for about three months. Brooke, it is free to sign up, free to submit, free to publish - in other words it costs you nothing but your time and creativity. When you open the page to sign up there is a helpline telephone no. Enjoy!
#56 by Brooke, Nov 17, 2007
Nah I changed my mind. I'll just help you on here. How's that?
#57 by Brooke, Nov 21, 2007
Hello? Is anybody there? Nobody has posted for awhile. Hello?
#58 by Brooke, Nov 26, 2007
Hi there! I posted on your healthy cat post Judy.
#59 by Brooke, Dec 22, 2007
Is nobody ever gonna post on here anymore or what?
#60 by Jared Stenzel, Dec 28, 2007
I wish I had a cat. Another member of my family is allergic to them otherwise we'd have one.
#61 by Brooke, Jan 4, 2008
I know how you feel. my friend's mom is allergic to cats so she can't have. that stinks!
#62 by Judy Sheldon, Jan 27, 2008
Jared, and Brooke, thank you for reading and commenting. I never noted the last comments in my comment log. Strange . . Brooke, are you going to become a writer, too. I am looking forward to reading your comment.
#63 by Brooke, Feb 13, 2008
I might soon.
#64 by Judy Sheldon, Feb 13, 2008
Brooke, I look forward to reading your work. Keep me posted.
#65 by Anna, Jun 22, 2008
Im trying to convince my mom to let me geta cat.Keep me posted with new ways to convince her.
#66 by Judy Sheldon, Jun 22, 2008
Anna, what is the reason for her hesitation - money, responsibility, training? Cats are one of the easiest animals to care for as long as you feed, water, scoop the kitty litter, and keep a safe environment. They help us more ways than we help them in that they kill our mice, provide us with company, relieve stress and promote healing to name a few. Do you have to convinnce your mom that you are responsbile enough to care for a cat? You know it means scooping kitty litter and keeping fresh food and water available?

Let me know how it goes, Anna, and take care.
