Short History:
What is known about this breed, is that Jan van Riebeeck brought with him a "bullen bijter" when he moved to the Cape, in Africa. This dog was a large sized and very strong breed, similar to the Mastiff. Those who followed also brought the largest and strongest dogs available, and over a number of decades only the strongest survived in the now desolated country. Later British Settlers brought, amongst others, the Bulldog and Mastiff dogs. Then in 1938 a genuine Bull Mastiff was imported to South Africa by De Beers to guard the diamonds mines. They imported a champion obtained from the Hottentots, who subsequently played a role in the development of the Boerboel. The Boerboel, or "Boerdogs" as they are also known, were scattered during the Great Trek. According to tradition, after the Anglo Boer War in 1902, these dogs were crossbred with the English long-legged Bulldog and with the Bull Mastiff, in the early and late 1950's. Which brought into being the Boerboel of today. This is an exceptional amount of positive breeding lines that have developed such an amazing dog.
Description:
The Boerboel is a large, physically powerful and intelligent working dog. Well balanced with good muscle development and lighthearted movement. The dog should be impressive and imposing. Male dogs appear distinctly masculine and bitches uniquely feminine, making them one of a few that are as such. The short, dense, sleek coat comes in cream white, pale tawny, reddish brown, brown and all shades of brindle. The face should blend symmetrically with the head, and can be with or without a black mask. The stop should be perceptible, but not prominent. The muzzle is black with large nostrils, which are well spaced. The loose, plump upper lip should envelop the lower lip, however it should not hang below the lower jaw. The ears should be of medium size and should be in proportion to the head. They are set fairly high and wide. The straight, short tail is attached high to the body. The hind paws are slightly smaller then the front paws. The paws are smoothed. The paws should be big, well-padded with dark rounded toenails and point straight forward. Dewclaws should be removed.
Temperament:
The Boerboel is reliable, obedient and intelligent, with strong watchful guard-dog instincts. The confident Boerboel are very playful and affectionate toward their owners. Their preferred recreation would be to play a game of fetch adoring every minute spent with their master. They are very gentle and good with children they know. Allowing such children to ride on their backs much like a horse, and loving the attention the whole way. An owner needs to be aware that the Boerboel are protectors and can be very aggressive to people passing in the street. They will guard their family, friends and property with their life. As such they will keep close watch over any house guest. The Boerboel will do okay with other dogs; cats and non-canine pets, at times even allowing birds come down and steal from a food bowl! This breed does without a doubt require a dominant owner.
Common Ailments:
Because this breed is a hybrid intentional bred from a blend of strong dogs, he is typically very healthy, and does not often fall ill.
Grooming/ Physical Needs:
An infrequent brushing and a monthly bath with a dip are all they should require. This breed will shed as any typical Mastiff Family dog.
Special Abilities/Talents:
Attentive, quick to react, guarding instincts refined, exceptional consideration for children and other animals
Meta Tag:
The Boerboel is an amazing success from South Africa, where the strongest dogs have combined to create this unique, and attractive breed.
