Six Ways to Increase Your Dog's Fitness Level and Help Him Lose Weight

If your dog's getting a bit pudgy around the middle, it may be time to increase his exercise. Here are six ways to increase your dog's fitness level.

Is your dog a bit plump around the middle? You should be able to feel but not see your dog's ribs if he's of normal weight. If not, it may be because he's not getting enough exercise. Exercise is important to a dog's health and longevity. If you're pressed for time, try to set aside thirty minutes each day to give his much needed dog exercise. He'll appreciate it and so will you when you see your dog's new svelte shape and enhanced fitness.

  1. Play Ball With Your Dog

    Ball is a great dog exercise and he considers it to be a game. If your dog doesn't respond to the challenge of playing ball, try a fast game of Frisbee. Both of these activities are guaranteed to get your dog's heart rate going and peel off those excess pounds.
  2. Consider a Dog Walking Service

    If you can't find the time to exercise your dog, schedule a daily session with a professional dog walker in your area to help maintain your dog's fitness. Ask your veterinarian or local kennel if they can recommend a reputable one. If you can't locate a dog walker in your area, pay a responsible friend or a teenager to walk your dog on a daily basis.
  3. Take Your Dog on a Brisk Fitness Walk

    A thirty minute brisk walk with your dog will benefit both of you. It's probably one of the best forms of exercise available to maintain your dog's weight and health. To make your walk more interesting for both you and your dog, try taking a different route each day.
  4. Head to the Nearest Dog Park

    Does your dog like to play with other dogs? Take him to an off-leash dog park so he can frolic with other dogs to his heart's content. You may even find it relaxing to watch the dogs interact in such a lively manner. Plus, you'll meet lots of fellow dog lovers.
  5. Take Your Dog to Doggy Day Care

    If you have a doggy day care center in your city, drop your dog off in the morning on your way to work Your dog will enjoy an action packed day of socialization with other frisky canines as well as lots of heart thumping exercise. Some doggy day care facilities even have dog swimming pools. Don't be surprised if your dog is exhausted when he gets home.
  6. Get a Dog Treadmill

    More and more people are investing in treadmills designed specifically for dogs. If you live in an area where the weather is not suitable for outdoor activities, a dog treadmill may the best way to maintain your dog's fitness. To find a treadmill for dogs, do a Google search for “dog treadmills” online.

Now that you know some simple secrets for maintaining your dog's fitness, you can watch that excess “puppy” fat disappear.
