Safety Tips When You're Around Dogs

What to do if a strange dog approaches you.

I learned these tips about staying safe around strange dogs at the animal shelter I used to work in. Note that the I'm going to be talking about dogs that don't want to hurt people they approach and this doesn't guarantee one hundred percent safety. There still might be a chance that you will be bitten by the dog even if you do perform these tips but that's highly unlikely.

  • The most helpful tip that I can give you in the event that as a stray dog or a stranger's dog comes up to you is to stay calm at all times without make too much noise. Most likely the dog will just think you're playing a game but at times the dog might believe that you're provoking it.
  • If a dog runs up to you, the best way to react is to stand still and avoid eye contact. If your holding anything drop it, this may be what is attracting the dog to you.
  • When I was younger I walked in an area where there used to be a lot of dogs and I always heard people say the same thing over and over again: “Don't run away“. You shouldn't run away because the dog may think this is a game, and start chasing you. Don't shout or wave your arms as this may either encourage or frighten him. If you act bored and don't make eye contact, most dogs will lose interest quickly.
  • If a dog jumps up to you and doesn't knock you over the best thing to do in this situation is to turn away. Don't shout or push him down, as he may think this is part of a game and jump up again. Ignore the dog and he'll soon get bored and should walk away.
  • If the dog knocks you over curl up in a ball, keeping your head and arms tucked under your body. Stay in this position until he gets bored and leaves.Once the dog has lost interest, keep watching him while you slowly move away backwards. If he returns do the same thing over again.

I hope you find these tips helpful and hopefully you will share them with others.

In the unlikely event of a dog attempting to bite you, cover your face or shield yourself with your arms. If he gets a hold of your arm look around for another person for assistance by calling out. After you are brought to safety check into a hospital if to see if you might have any rabies.
