Congratulations, you have a new puppy! You are now ready to bring your puppy home. Your puppy will need a few things first before you bring him home. He will need food and water bowls, a few toys to chew on and play with, a collar and a leash. You might want to get him a doggie bed and blanket, as well. He will also need a bag of newspapers or training pads until your puppy is house trained!
Puppy Comes Home
The day has arrived! It is now time to pick up your puppy. Many people think that car rides are a traumatic experience for them but most dogs love to go for car rides! Introducing your puppy to the family is a very exciting time for everyone and the only one that might be anxious, is the puppy. If you handle the situation well, the puppy will quickly learn to relax and adapt to his new home life and family.
Puppy Hints
The first hint is to dog proof your house and get it ready for your new family addition to your home. When you move things around, just remember that it is only temporary until the puppy is older and more mature.
The second hint is to house train your puppy. Take your puppy out frequently at first and let him squat and potty. Try finding a few words that will mean to go potty like, “Do your business” (which is what we use), or “Go potty”, simple phrases that the puppy will eventually learn to understand. After he goes potty tell him, “Good puppy”, or “good dog”, lavishly praise him, and give him a treat. As time goes by, he will be sleeping through the night and you and he, and the rest of the family can finally get some lost sleep!
The third hint that might help your puppy feel more at home during his first night is to put him in his own bed with a blanket (near you), a toy, or a piece of clothing that smells of you. This will be comforting to your puppy and, hopefully, be able to sleep.
Well, you and your puppy had a tiring first day. The next days will get better and you and your puppy will get into a routine and he will be one of the family.
