Pet insurance is taking off like a bandit. If you have a pet or pets that you love and want to protect, pet insurance is the way to go. Whether you have one pet or several they have a plan for you. It is not as expensive as health insurance for yourself and or your family, but it is an added expense.
When my niece lived with us she got a chihuahua from a vendor at a local flee market. Yes I agree not the best place to buy one and she really had not planned on it, but the dog won her heart and of course she could not pass it up. When we took them (I also bought a puppy that weekend) to the vet we got informed that her puppy had a bad heart and the vet advised that we get him surgery or he would not survive a year. Well we did not have the money for the surgery as it was going to be several thousands of dollars. And at that time we did not know about the insurance for pets. To make a long story short, it has been almost 5 years since that visit to the vet, and Mickey is still going strong. Yes, we have since changed vets!
If we had had insurance at the time we most likely would not have thought twice about giving him the surgery. Now I am glad that we did not as I am not sure that vet knew how to handle it! She has checked with other vets though and they have informed her that any surgery would have most likely killed him as his heart would not have been able to handle it. This is not an endorsement to not have insurance, not at all, it is a hope that everyone with an animal that you love to cover them with insurance if you can afford it. As pet insurance is very like our own health insurance, you would not have surgery unless you checked with a couple of doctors, don't do that either with your loved pets unless you check with a couple of vets. Although some insurance's for pets do not pay all of the expenses it does pay part of them. And when you have several pets that can be a big expense even with the vaccinations, boosters, wormers spaying and neutering, of which most of the pet insurance's don't pay for. The insurance is for the unexpected that we have just like you would with a child. Usually the coverage begins as quickly as three days after you have gotten it, for accidents and fourteen days for illnesses and routine care, if you choose that plan. Most plans are not unlike health plans where you pick the plan you want to fit what you think is necessary.
Family pets are an important part of our lives and we should be responsible for them as we would our own family. If you do not have pet insurance think about adding it to your agenda of things to do today. It is not only a good investment for your pets but it keeps them healthy and prolongs their lives giving us more time with them.
