My Cat: My Alarm Clock

Description of how Bella wakes me up.

My cat Bella, named after Bella Lugosi is a Maincoon, 4 years old and weighs about 20 pounds has become my alarm clock. Since we live in a 2 floor house, our bedrooms are on the 2nd floor and the cat's food and water are downstairs. For privacy reasons, my husband and I have also inserted a trap door on our bedroom door for the cats to have freedom to come and go as they please.

For the last 4 months Bella has become very lazy. It first began one morning when I was in the bathroom and was letting the water run in the sink until the hot water kicked in so I could take a shower. Bella jumped up onto the sink and began drinking from the faucet. Now every morning regardless if it's the weekend or not, Bella will meow and meow near the bathroom door until either my husband or I get out of bed. Please keep in mind that we wake up at 5 a.m. during the week. This is not pleasant on the weekends.

On the weekends, since we like to remain in bed a little longer than 5 a.m., Bella gets very upset. When he realizes nobody is getting out of bed and the meowing has not caught our attention, he has now come up with the idea of somehow getting our attention. So he climbs onto the dresser and pushes something off the dresser that will make a large enough noise to startle us to wake up.

Recently, after realizing neither tactic would work on us, Bella goes near the head of the bed and with his big paws begins to lightly scratch our arm until we get up. The latest thing is, Bella is so lazy, he'll wait by the bedroom door until you open it to avoid going through the trap door. I believe he is in fear of getting stuck since he's getting so large around the middle.

I had a cat once who woke me up at 5 in the morning every day by chewing on my hair. She wanted to be let out for about 5 minutes and then let back in.
The cat we have now is much more annoying. She jumps onto every surface and pushes stuff onto the floor. She is the reason I keep the bedroom door closed.

Karen, that is so funny. I can't close my bedroom door because, my husband feels the cats are his kids and have put a flap door on our bedroom door so they have full access. Bella is beginning to get the hint when I don't wake up.

I have a 17 pound cat I inherited from my fiances son. He likes to knock my TV controller of my nightstand, he steals all of my hair ties which I have found under the bed, and he likes to try on my shoes. Should I be Worried?

Lauren. Cats sense when a person doesn't like them or doesn't give them the attention they are looking for. It sounds to me this cat is just looking for your attention. Try giving the cat more attention - actions may change.
