Long Haired Miniature Dachshund Meets a Beagle

Do you know what happens when a long haired miniature dachshund accidentally breeds with a beagle?

We are the proud owners of three dogs; a Springer Spaniel, a long haired miniature dachshund and a beagle. Our dachshund is a Registered Purebred Stud, through the Canadian Kennel Club. Our other two dogs are purebreds but no registered. However, enough of the boring details.

During this past summer my wife was away for an extended period. Our beagle happened to go into heat and our little Doxie decided that he should the one to do the honors. We have no intention of letting the two of them get together and based on a previous attempt by our little stud, we did not think there was any way it could happen just upon the size difference in the dogs. Well, was I wrong about that. Unfortunately, during one of their pee breaks in the backyard, the dogs managed to get the deed done unknown to any of us and a short time later, our precious beagle began showing the signs of impending motherhood.

My wife and I were quite anxious and worried about what the end result would be but our local vet said that we would just have to take a wait and see approach. Well, one ago the new canine family arrived. Three tiny little puppies and ever so cute. One was the same coloring as our dachshund (brownish) and the other two are, well shall we say, an interesting color scheme so far. They are both black and grey at this time. The black is obviously very common, and expected as there is black in our beagle, but the grey is quite unusual. It is not a color that is in either dog, nor is it a grey shade that I can recall seeing in many other dogs. Time will tell, as they are only a week old and they will likely change dramatically in the next few weeks. But for now, they are three absolutely adorable healthy puppies. The biggest dilemma is whether we call them Beniers or Weagles, with reference to wiener dogs and beagles.

We will keep you posted as to their growth and development and I will try to post a few pictures in my upcoming submissions.
