So you just got back from the vet and he has told you that Fido/Fifi has licked the wrong frog, eaten the wrong plant, or for whatever reason should be on a bland diet for a few days. You didn't question this as you know what it generally means for you. Clear liquids, chicken soup, toast, crackers, etc. What it means for your little dear is a little different.
First of all it is good to hold all food for about 12 hours or however long your vet suggests. It's best to ask before you leave. Be sure to have plenty of clean fresh water available at all times though as you don't want him/her getting dehydrated, unless advised otherwise by your vet. Then introduce plain boiled chicken. No salt in the water, any fat, or skin. Just the meat in small amounts. The amount will vary with the size of your dog. Don't let them grab and gulp. Moderation at this time is best. Most likely they won't want much anyway. If they totally refuse at first that's okay. Keep offering at timely intervals. Then once that is well tolerated you can scramble them some eggs. Again leave bland! No salt, butter, milk, or other additives you think he might want. They will only set him back.
As these two foods are well tolerated and kept down, I usually start adding in a little "Nutri-cal. This is available from your vet or at most pet stores. It is a great tasting supplement that is full of vitamins and minerals, and will help add a little energy boost. Be very careful though and read the label as this is weight specific and can give your pet diarrhea among other problems if given improperly. You also want to make sure that your pet is ready for that step. Don't push them to feel better just because you want them to. Sometimes they need a little down time same as we do.
Another helpful tool, and again I stress check with your vet before using any over-the-counter medicines on your pet, is Pepcid! Grind it up and give the proper dose to your dog on their tongue. This will help calm their stomach and let the healing process begin again a little sooner. Remember even a 10lb pet will only use a tiny amount so be VERY careful when administering.
If you notice unusual shaking, drooling, or an overall worsening of their condition seek medical help immediately! You know your pet and just by observing their signals you can tell a lot. Larger breeds can tolerate and overcome a lot more than tiny breed, but they all need a little TLC from time to time especially after licking the wrong toad!
