How to Raise a Goldfish 2

The second guide to goldfish keeping.

The fish keepers code

Recently, I have found the fish keepers code:

  • A goldfish is not a toy, but a living animal.
  • Although it lives in water, a fish has many needs and feelings, like hunger, contentment or fear, which are similar to yours
  • Remember that your fish depends on you for its survival. As it cannot tell you when something is wrong, you must watch it and care for it every day.

Food for your fish

Your fish will die if you won't feed them. As I researched that they can survive for a week without food, but they won't like you much if you feed them once a week, here are my instructions on how to feed them.

Feed the fish a pinch of fish food every 2 days per fish. Or about the old 1/8 teaspoon every 2 days too.

And are you unsure on what type of food you should feed your fish? You could ask the staff, or you could just select flakes as they are easy to swallow for the fish. But some fish also favors pellets, but they always love live food, brine shrimps and the daphnia insect are what I am sure they will eat. Don't feed them as a daily meal, just as treats.

Outdoor pond goldfish keeping

I forgot to tell you that goldfish in bowls won't be good, as the opening isn't big enough to absorb oxygen for the fish, therefore suffocating the fish and may die.

Now back to the subject. You may not want to keep goldfish in tanks or bowls, either you think the fish is not having enough space or you don't feel like the fish has enough space inside. Therefore, you could keep your goldfish outside, yes, outside! You could make the pond by digging a hole in a ground and get some material to stop it from being soaked from soil or a concrete pond, you decide. But unfortunately, I don't know how to make a the digging hole one, but I do know about the concrete, its more recommended. But bear in mind you should also look for a more detailed instructions to make this as I didn't found much. And some fish cannot be in ponds.

Concrete ponds are the best and most permanent type of pond. There are 2 types of concrete ponds, informal and formal. The formal one is a irregular shaped one and the informal is a rectangular or a more square type of pond.

When you decided what type of pond you want, you first have to design then dig what you designed. Remember to have the dimensions required for the fish. Always remember to have the edges on the same level. The maximum depth is to be at least 1 meter. Once the pond is constructed, it should be filled with water, left for 48 hours and emptied again. This is to remove poisonous substances which may have emanated from the building materials.

Note: This is only part of what you should do for a pond, only use it if you cannot gather enough information.

Fish keeping tips

  • Fish, even just one should be kept in tanks and ponds instead of bowls, as the opening is not big enough to absorb enough oxygen, and the fish will soon suffocate.
  • Its best to feed the fish 2 times a day with the whole day meal split in 2, instead of just feeding in all in one go.
  • Fish usually eat more less that you expect, so feed the fish, one by one
  • Have fish medicine, such as Melafix stored in case a fish suddenly gets sickness.
  • Always research the type of goldfish you want to keep on the internet to know how it should be treated.
  • Fish cannot tell you in any way that it needs something, so you need to watch it every single day.

Conclusion

So there you have it, a longer part 2 of how to raise goldfish properly to fill in the gaps, remember to also see the original one (first one) for those who are beginners of fish keepers and more information. Thank you for all your comments.
