How to Build a Dog House

Your canine best friend deserves to live a life of comfort. Building a dog house can be a very satisfying experience especially if you love your pet. It is important to keep your dog's needs foremost in your mind. Not only should the doghouse be safe but should provide adequate room and ventilation for your pet to move around.

Materials Required

  • Wood
  • Concrete

Tools Required

  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Concrete mixer

Instructions

Difficulty: Fairly easy

Step One: A customized house

It's important to design a dog house according to the dog breed. You need to understand what your breed of dog requires in a house. For example, the insulation of the doghouse should be designed keeping in mind the thickness of the dogs' coat. In case of mixed breed dogs, consult a veterinarian to find out what requirements need to be kept in mind.

Step Two: Decide on the size of the dog house

The house that you build should be a permanent shelter for your dog. You don't want to be building one every month. Determine how big the doghouse should be. If your pet is still a pup, find out how tall it will become one day.

Step Three: Ventilating the dog house

The most significant feature is ventilation as it is very much required for easy and comfortable breathing for your pet. Even if you built the house with ample height, improper ventilation might suffocate your dog. A solution to the problem would be by using wood so that air circulation happens freely. The entry door should be large enough for the dog to enter and exit. Also add on an additional window for easy air circulation.

Step Four: Construct dog house with enough inner space

Don't reduce the space in the interior of the house. This is because you have to leave space for your pet to sit, stand and move about freely. The house should also have enough space for keeping food bowls, treasured objects etc.

Step Five: Placing the dog house

Always choose the dog house to be placed in a shady region so as to keep the dog comfortable and warm. It has to be durable and should withstand extreme climates too.

Step Six: Ensuring proper flooring

Never leave the floor as it is. This is because your dog will end up tearing the grass always. Construct the floor with the materials of your own choice such as wood or concrete.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always keep the dog house as simple as possible as the dogs are able to adapt to the outdoor surroundings
  • Roof the pet house with wood strips so that it ensures easy air circulation
  • Study about your dog and collect as many information as possible before you start building
