Home Is Where the Cat Is

Pets are not only part of the family, but their antics help make a home what it is.

He came to us from out of nowhere. The tiny, black kitten with mysterious eyes of gold had just been taken away from the loving comfort of his mother and siblings far too early. From the moment our eyes first met, we seemed to instantaneously connect. The timid little creature sat for a short while in the safety of my lap, and then suddenly began to climb up and onto my shoulder, where for the next hour or so, he slept. During the night he nestled quietly by my side, only to be quickly overwhelmed the following morning when he was discovered by our five children. The constant roughhousing this kitten has since endured from them has certainly helped him grow into his name. Spooky, the quiet and apprehensive kitten, is now a wildly active, yet easily spooked juvenile. He has definitely given the kids their well-deserved paybacks. Others have even informed us that Spooky is one of the meanest cats they come across as he typically greets people by biting at the backs of their legs.

Our nights, which were once quite peaceful, are now suddenly filled with the continuous thumping sounds of Spooky’s racing feet as he runs throughout the house. Our doorways have become favorite tree-climbing adventures, and his passionate love for curtain climbing, literally, has also turned into a sporting event. The inquisitiveness of this cat has by no means stopped. He seems to possess an insatiable curiosity with water and can most often be found in one of the sinks or the shower. And if given the opportunity, he’ll even watch the water disappear as you flush the toilet. Spooky also enjoys helping out with the laundry. He will wait with anticipation as I empty the basket of clothes onto the bed and after scouring through the pile, he will triumphantly walk away with a sock. On the upside, our family frequently receives a good laugh as we catch him while he is lounging. Spooky prefers to sleep lying stretched out on his back, feet in the air.

When it comes to eating, he has developed an obsession for plain potato chips. This sudden urge came about after one of the kids spilled some on the floor. Now whenever Spooky hears the crumpling sounds from a bag of chips, he quickly sprints over and begins begging for one. Our family has also discovered another unexpected pastime. While working on a school project, my daughter’s poster board abruptly became the cat’s dance floor, which sparked an unusual idea from my daughter. After witnessing his amazement with the colors on the poster board, she decided to stamp Spooky’s paws with ink and let him dance. All at once, our crafty cat became a dancing artist.

While his frequent, sneaky attacks drive us crazy at times, this amazing cat has brought our family endless joy. He came to us from out of nowhere, but he has since established his rightful place within our home.
