It is fun and easy to set up a freshwater aquarium. Even a beginner can learn to maintain an aquarium successfully. Only a small space is required, but the pleasure an aquarium can provide is immeasurable.
SET-UP
Choose an aquarium that will fit comfortably into your environment. A corner of the bedroom, a focal point in the living room, or a bright spot in the den - these are all ideal locations. The aquarium should be clean, free of leaks and the stand should be sturdy. Before filling with water, make sure the tank is level to avoid stress fractures.
WATER
Fill with water to within 2 inches of the top. If your home has a water softener, turn it off before filling your tank. Pre-treatment drops may be used if your water supply contains a substantial amount of chlorine. Install a pump and filter system recommended for the corresponding volume of your tank. Turn on your system and allow the water to circulate for 48 hours.
ADDING FISH
You can choose fish from around the world to fill your aquarium. Just make sure they're compatible. Start with a few inexpensive fish to “test the waters.” You may add fish at any time, but don't overcrowd your tank. Add natural or artificial greenery to provide hiding places. Feed appropriate food daily, add an aquarium light, and you're set.
ENJOY!
An aquarium in your home or office can provide a focal point of interest and requires minimal care. Watching aquarium fish as they swim around in your tank is a relaxing activity. It is a great hobby, not necessarily expensive, and can be embarked upon at any age.
