Some dogs are really great choices when thinking about guard dogs so why not have a great guard dog? Guard Dogs are trained to guard but some only watch and bark. These dogs are called watch dogs or alarm dogs.
Watch Dogs just bark at the intruder and don't always resort to violence. They can, but that would be a personal preference for them. They are just their to warn you that an intruder is coming and warn the intruder that you are coming.
Protection dogs are family dogs that will protect their families in a crisis situation, will defend and try to save their family, rather than attack and bite. They are trained to be good companions that will be good with children. However, if the master is physically attacked, they will take some kind of protective action like jumping, snarling, seizing, or chasing. Airedale Terrier, Belgian Sheepdog, Bouvier des Flandres, Rottweiler, Boxer, Briard, Doberman, German Shepherd, Siberian Husky, Giant Schnauzer, and Chow, are excellent for this role.
Depending on which magazine, book, website or breeder we consult to we would get a different list of the best guard dog breeds. Some would guarantee for the Mastiff, Dogue De Bordeaux and the Neapolitan. Others would practically insist that the Malinois, Komondor, Puli and the German Shepherd are the best guard dogs in the whole universe. Some would shiver from head to toe when recounting about the South African Boerboel, the Rhodesian Ridgeback and the Tosa. Yet others would recommend the practicality and no-nonsense qualities of the Rottweiler, Doberman or Weimaraner.
Here are some other great guard/watch dogs:
Rottweiler: Rottweilers are also fierce dogs that can be aggressive. These dogs have a thin coat of fur covering their body. Rottweilers make excellent guard dogs.. In some cases, they can also cause death and the owner will be in trouble.
Maltese: These dogs may look gentle, and they are, but they make excellent watch dogs. They will bark at intruders like all other members of the toy breeds but they basically inform their owner that there is an intruder coming their way. These little dogs have a non shedding feature and they have long flowing hair which should be groomed daily. Maltese are really playful little breeds of dogs. These dogs do tend to bark quite a lot. The Maltese would make a great watch dog.
German Shepherds: German Shepherds were originally bred to be a herding dog, but were recognized as having a good working ability thus putting them in the police field.
