Elite Stingray Filter

Review of the Elite Stingray Filters.

I started fish keeping when I was 18, I'm now 34. I've used many different filters, lights and heater combinations just like every other fish enthusiast. For years I stuck to using Fluval filter products. Recently I set up a 2ft tank for two albino Oscars. This tank was purchased as a complete unit. Including heater, light and an Elite Stingray Filter. The heater works fine and has done from day one, the light was replaced about a month after purchase. The bulb never fit the attachments properly and this caused the bulb to give up way sooner than expected. The replacement bulb, bought from a local reputable supplier, has lasted ever since it was installed and gives a better light over the inside of the tank.

The worst part of the set up though has got to be the Elite Stingray Filter. I'd never used a filter from this company before and after using this filter I never will again. Not only does this filter, in my opinion look down right ugly, but every write up I've seen for this filter says exactly the same thing: "provides silent performance" and "effective mechanical, chemical and biological filtration". I couldn't disagree more with these comments. The noise this makes is, for a tank filter, horrendous. The length of time this will keep the water clean and clear is nothing compared to other makes of filter on the market. I just can not see why every write up praises this make of filter. The Oscars I have in their 2ft tank are soon to be moved to a tank twice the size so they can grow and mature, I will certainly not be using a Stingray filter in the new tank.

i have read these comments also that praise this filter however we also bought a package tank, the heater perfect, the light-bulb went and with a new one no problems, and then the filter! We have had many fish and many deaths in which the fish were found behind the filter. However we originally thought it was due to four fish we owned that were fin nipers, causing distress and making the fish feel like they want to hide. When the shop agreed with this theory they exchanged those fish and we brought others. After not even 8 hours i noticed we were a fish down; it was stuck behind the filter. The stingray filter apears to be so strong it sucks in weak fish and so kills them.

Thank you for leaving a comment. While I have never had this happen with the Elite filter, my fish are a little large to be dragged in, I have noticed that two of my algea feeding fish like to feed straight from the filter intake itself. Perhaps your fish are trying to do the same but are getting stuck. My two Oscar try to take food stuck on top of and around the filter, maybe your fish are do this and getting stuck?
Thanks for the comments.
