Don't Die Today: 10 Tips from a Dying Dog

A dog with a death sentence! Buddy the dog shares 10 tips for daily living - one day at a time!

Our family has adopted a little Maltese dog, which we named "Buddy". He has a death sentence hanging over him. Specialist veterinarians said that he would not pass the age of six months; he has a huge hole in his little heart and simply cannot, will not, survive long.

One day he will lie down, not eat and need to be "put down" - so we've been advised. As long as he's enjoying life and shows no signs of pain (he's a wimp and hates his fur and claws trimmed even).

Buddy is so full of bounce and joy that we've decided to give Him a life and he is now over a year old. Because of a few health issues, Buddy is living with me at this time, and here are ten things Buddy shows me each day:

  1. Get up at dawn and leap all the way down the stairs, then do it again several times before running outside to do the "bathroom" thing.
  2. Eat a good-sized vitamin-filled breakfast with some protein, and just a couple of snacks the rest of the day.
  3. Play with Twink, the boss of the house, a Chihuahua, let him think he is bigger, stronger and fiercer than I. Make friends with everyone, including all other animals.

  4. Run and leap about outside several times a day. Take the string ball right to the human and beg to play throw, fetch and return, often.
  5. Lick those you love most, and often. Roll over in the path of any walking human and beg for lots of strokes.
  6. Check out the flowers in the garden, all the trees, and dig a few holes. Check if either of the two gates are open and if so, hare around the street and visit any unsuspecting animals and humans.

  7. Chomp on a raw bone or two now and then. Make sure they are hidden beneath curtains, or behind the sofa, for next time.
  8. Play with clothes, drag and toss them around the house, particularly bits of underwear. Collect one of each pair of shoes, sox and slippers, hide a few for future fun.

  9. Take a short nap or two in the sun.
  10. Sack out soon after sunset, dream of tomorrow and sleep peacefully until dawn.

Really cute! I felt moved for the poor thing. I hope he dies a normal death or at least survives as long as he can without pain. :(
Its so bad when someone enjoys life, but cannot live it long enough.

Great work, really sad,

I know that I am going to be a HUGE mess when Buddy does die (also my little Twink who is going on four years old) -- But I'm celebrating EACH DAY with Buddy! He sure shows us how to pack a lot of living in just ONE DAY!
THANKS for your comment and thoughts for Buddy who got up this morning and did the leaping down the stairs and running around as usual, only it is raining and he'll do more damage inside today!

Oh, Carolyn Ann - this made me cry! Here's hoping that Buddy has a long and joy filled life - he's certainly got the spirit and the courage, not to mention the TLC from his Humans, to prove the vets wrong!

Thanks for your comment, Glenys! Buddy has already proved his prognosis to be wrong! Vets from different clinics said the same thing--he would not live past 6 months old because the hole in his heart was so large that his heart would not sustain an adult dog body--he's fully grown now and full of life as in his 'Ten tips'.

Yes, very moving, so small and so much courage.

No stories are more touching than true stories. Buddy is lucky he has a wonderful and loving family. He is happy and will continue to be for the rest of his life. I know it will hurt when little Buddy is gone but the life you are giving him now is all any loving dog can ask for.

I tried doing the first one. Was I supposed to take all the steps in one bound? I couldn't and made a mess of the bathroom thing about 3 steps from the bottom. The second time was even worse. I landed in the mess I had made the first leap. Everyone was so annoyed at me that no one was willing to fix my breakfast, so I dragged my blanket over behind the piano and wept the rest of the morning.

Yes, Buddy takes ALL the stairs in one bound! And he is still alive on July 1st, 2008 - I'll have to do another write up with pictures as to how he has recently defied death!! AGAIN!! He's much loved and still much in love with living and STAYING ALIVE!
