Do you own a pet? Chances are you do, for the majority of people in our country own some sort of pet, and the most popular pets to own are cats and dogs. People might think dogs and cats are similar in many ways because they are the two most common house pets of today, but cats and dogs are very different species of animals.
Both animals are family orientated, but it can be disagreed on which one is more for a family. Furthermore, it is agreed that cats get lazier and fat when they get older and dogs will always play no matter how old they get. Additionally, there are different breeds of dogs and cats that could be an exception to this. For example a Chihuahua is more of a lap dog, and it doesn’t usually play very much. Obviously, if someone has lots of kids, a dog is more preferable. If someone lives by there self, then a cat would be best for you.
Cats and dogs were made into the pets we know and love today because of years and years of breeding. In fact, both animals originated from different region, of the earth. For instance, cats came from North Africa. Wild cats lived in Northern Africa and were eventually tamed by the ancient Egyptians. As a result, they were eventually bred into the dogs and cats we know of today. Dogs, however, are a different story. They originated from wolves and were tamed first in eastern Asia. Dogs continued to be crossbred, until all the breeds of dogs of today were created. In conclusion, both animals came from different regions of the earth, having very different back grounds.
There are millions of dogs and cats in the United States today. Dogs, as well as cats, are the two most popular pets. In fact, there are about 100 million cats who are owned by families. Also, there are approximately 110 million dogs in the US today. All in all, dogs are more popular then cats because of their playful nature and companionship.
Even though it looks like dog make very good pets, cats are not as high maintenance as dogs. Cats are very dependable and don't need lots of attention, because they like to lie around all day. Dogs, on the other hand, need to be taken care of on a daily basis. Dogs need brushed, walked, and cared for on a regular schedule. While dogs are very high maintenance, what some people like to do is shave their dog, so it takes away some of the strenuous grooming. In conclusion, if someone is very lazy, and will forget about your dog, a cat would be a better pet.
Often people make the mistake of thinking that dogs are smarter then cats. This is Especially true because dogs can do complicated tricks and feats. But Surprisingly, cats are a lot smarter then dogs. In fact, cats could easily perform tricks twice as complicated as dogs; the only reason they don't is because they are stubborn and only do what they feel like doing. Still, dogs are very loyal and obedient and that's why dogs like doing tricks with their master. To sum up, cats are a lot smarter, just more stubborn than dogs.
Cats and dogs have been domesticated since 15000 BC. Dogs were pets 5500 years before cats. Dogs were the first pets tamed by human beings and were domesticated at around 15000 BC. On the other hand, cats have been domesticated since 9500 BC by the ancient Egyptians. Dogs were the first pets probably because they are loyal and very obedient.
Finally, the average dog is bigger then the average cat. Although this is true, dogs vary from extremely small to really big. House cats are all pretty much the same size. This might seem really weird, but it can be explained. When dogs were first tamed, they were constantly bred to make lots of different breeds, some small, some big. Cats, however, were not constantly bred and made into totally opposite breeds so this is why cats are all about the same size, and dogs vary.
Lots of people see cats and dogs as pretty much the same pet, but hopefully after reading this, you can see all the differences of these two magnificent and extraordinary creatures.
