Dog Beds: The Good, The Bad and The Cute

Dogs have the strangest sleeping habits!

I always thought dogs looked so cozy on those expensive doggie beds but was appalled at the price! My Boston Terrier, Gus, had an absolutely wonderful bed but always refused to use it, preferring to sleep with each of my sons on alternating nights. He was very fair about it and the boys always knew when their turn was!

Since my husband was adamant that there be no dogs in our bed, I capitulated and for awhile things went smoothly. However, the time came after many years of marriage that I was left alone with the boys, the dogs and the services of a wonderful divorce attorney. A new dog had joined the household as a companion for Gus. Cookie, an adorable rat terrier mix, fit right in and whoever Gus wasn't sleeping with had Cookie in their bed.

Little did I know at the time that we became a family of three and two dogs that my bed would never be my own! Of course, the first night I invited both dogs to bed with me; prior to marriage I'd always let my dogs sleep where they liked and my bed was usually where they liked to be! That first night was a revelation and a bumpy one at that. You wouldn't think two medium sized dogs could push a grown woman out of a queen-sized bed but believe me, they can. After that, I became a bit more assertive.

Since then, the dogs and I have moved back to my home state while my grown sons remained behind. Gus and Cookie have effectively taken over the entire house (my very first house!) and every piece of furniture within but their favorite place is a large wicker laundry basket and on cold days they've learned what we all seem to learn in childhood-leave your favorite chair (bed, in this case) and it's fair game for anyone else!

Cookie eventually settled on a good alternative, the top of one of the couch cushions, and Gus didn't want to miss out on a good thing so it was back and forth between basket and couch. Sometimes they would both be atop the couch and then race each other for the basket!

But of course, at night they sleep with me. I don't get shoved out of bed anymore but I do sometimes find myself cramped for space as they stretch themselves out like the royalty they think they are!
