Children and Puppies: Which Breed is Best?

Ever find it hard to say no to your child when they ask you for a pet of their very own? Some dogs do well with families, and some do not, so what are the best dog for you and your loved ones?

While there is never any guarantee that the adorable pup you get at the pet store will get along with your loved ones, especially children, there are some breeds of dog that fair very well with children.

  • Pug

A smaller breed of dog, a pug generally weighs between fourteen and twenty pounds. They are easier for a child to handle when excitable; a pug does not have enough force to knock a child down when playing, or walking. Pugs do shed, usually with the warmer seasons.
  • Beagle

Generally weighs about forty to fifty pounds, but is a rather docile breed. They do not require much grooming, as their hair is short, but they do shed, and bark a lot.
  • Siberian Husky

Very energetic and require daily exercise. Approximate weight is forty to sixty pounds. One of the best dog breeds for children as they are very affectionate, but not a good choice if you have other animals, since they have a hunting instinct.
  • Mastiff

Though they over-salivate, and can weigh up to two hundred pounds, the English Mastiff is a loyal breed of dog that is also well known to be used as a guard dog. This breed needs frequent exercise and a house large enough to suit their size.
  • Labrador Retriever

Known to be one of the best breeds for those with children. Very gentle animals but they love exercise and need a lot of it. They need to be properly trained at a young age and supervised because they have a like for digging in the yard. Approximate weight: sixty five to eighty pounds.

There are thousands of breeds of dogs that are readily available for purchase, but when bringing a puppy into a home with a child, extra care in the research process will ensure that you get the best breed to suit your lifestyle.
