Cats are wonderful creatures. Our family, over time, has adopted five cats. Living in a four-bedroom home with five cats and a bird can be a hassle, but we've managed.
Here, I will spell out the essentials of what you really need for a cat.
Number One: Cat food
Cat food also comes in the same meaning as “cat and water dishes.” Trust me, you'll want them. We tried using human dishes for awhile, but after one broke and one didn't work, we decided to buy them bowls. A good set of a combined food-and-water dish only costs $2.50-$5.00, and it's well worth it. You don't want to break all your good bowls, do you?
The second thing is the food. Don't automatically go for the cheapest brand - who knows what's in it? If you are adopting from a shelter, ask the woman what kind of food they use. Chances are, if the cat has been there long enough, they'll be used to the food and eat it for you.
If you are adopting from a store (e.g. Petsmart), you should ask what they feed their cats. If it's a little big for your budget, go for the name brand they'll likely carry in their store, or when in doubt, head over to Wal-Mart or Kroger.
If adopting from someone in a newspaper ad, ask him or her what kind of food the cat likes. If taking in a stray, pick a random one off the shelf, or consult someone at any pet store. Be sure to take your newly adopted stray in for shots, and make sure it's legal to keep strays in your area.
number Two: Litter boxes
“Oh, my cat doesn't need a litter box,” I overheard the lady say at a popular retail store pet the other day. “I'll just let it wonder outside to poop and pee.”
I won't tell you how that conversation went over with the cashier, but let me tell you this: Letting your cats outside can be dangerous, especially when you've just moved. The cat may try and get back to your old home. Also, you're not home 24/7. Even if you work at home, what about when you go shopping? Your cat may choose that very minute to do it's business. They're essential.
I recommend a store-bought litter pan big enough for your cat, and depending on number of cats, some Tidy Cats or other another litter. You may also want some paper or plastic bags.
