Where To Get Your Betta And Fish Supplies:

You can easily get the tank, food, and just about everything else from your local pet shop, or anywhere that sells fish supplies (Wal-mart, pet stores, etc.)

The tank will run you anywhere from about $5 for a plastic or glass bowl, to $50 for a large ten or twenty gallon tank. I'd say get about a 2.5 aquarium kit, which will run you around $25.

You'll then need gravel, and any decorations you might want. You'll need one to two pounds of gravel per gallon in your aquarium. Gravel runs anywhere from $1 per pound, to $5 per pound. The average being about $2.

Decorations, in the form of live or fake plants, and ceramic models, can vary greatly in price. Live plants will sell anywhere from $.99 to $20, depending on type and size. You can get some nice ones for your betta tank for a dollar or two. (plants are optional)

Other decorations (ceramic stones, models, chests, etc.) start at about $5, and go up after that. With these it all depends on what you want and how much you want to spend. (these are also optional)

Next, is the food. You can get a small container for about $3-5. This'll last you quite awhile, as bettas are small fish and don't eat much!

You can buy cultures online and grow your own constant supply of live worms for about $5.

Now, all you need is the actual fish! They can vary greatly in price, ranging from the run-of-the-mill pet shop fish that sell for about $3, to some of the rarer varieties you can only get from a breeder, and can cost as much as (sometimes even more) $100! Basically, it's up to you where to get your betta. If you'd like to get one from a pet store, that's fine, or if you have a certain color you want, you can buy from a breeder, it's all up to you!

A note of caution though, pet store fish aren't always very healthy, and are almost always over six-months old, often over a year. If you do get one from a pet store, make sure it is healthy and was kept in good conditions. Also, accept the fact that you may not have the betta for as long as you expected.

There you go! Using the information on this webpage, you should be able to care for your betta very well! I still recommend reading as much as you can before getting your betta, or any other pet for that matter, because the more you know, the happier you and your pet will be!

Thanx... excellent comments and advice! I am English, but live in Thailand and actually breed my own Bettas... both the original Thai fighters (but I don't fight them!) as well as the much prettier large finned 'Chinese' versions. You are perfectly correct in saying that although they CAN survive in small and quite dirty waters, they have a much healthier life when taken proper care of. Maybe you can see your way to giving some advice on breeding Bettas? It is relatively easy and so rewarding. At the risk of sounding too patronising... a big WELL DONE to you! :)
