Overview:

The Bichon Frisé is a small, sturdy, white powder puff of a dog, with an amazing and positive temperament evident in their short full tail being happily carried over the back, complimented by the dark eyed inquisitive expression on their face.

Short History:

The Bichon Frisé may have originated in the Canary Islands, off the coast of Italy, then brought to the European mainland by sailors during the 1300's. A Bichon is a type of curly coated small water dog that developed on a variety of islands. The Bichon Frisé is the only double-coated dog of the Bichon line. They are believed to be descendants of a now extinct Water Spaniel. They became popular with the French and Spanish royalty during the height of their reign. Later, they became loved circus performers, and have been described as charming puffballs. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized them in 1971. Canada followed in 1975.

Description:

Bichons normally live from twelve to fifteen years. The Bichon Frisé loves human companionship even with his strong independent disposition. He is exceedingly good with children even from infancy. Bichon Frisé does not tend to have skin problems common other all-white breeds. The Bichon Frisé head forms a triangle from the outer corner of the eyes to the end of the nose. The muzzle is well balanced, with their eyes being fairly large, round and dark. The ears hang close to the head and are covered with long, fine pure white hair. His legs are straight and his feet are firm and smoothed. The tail is set low and carried over the back or may hang when the dog is relaxed. His coat is a double coat, with the under coat being short and soft. The outer coat is typically two inches long and is fine and silken with twisting curls, if not brushed out. This beautiful breed has a white coat with some shadings of buff, cream and apricot are acceptable, if less than ten percent of the body. Average height is ranging from nine and eleven inches and average weight ranging from seven and eleven pounds.

Temperament:

Some may be difficult to housebreak, thus they require a patient owner to watch the dog closely to see when they need to go outside. They are quite gentle mannered, sensitive, playful and very affectionate. A cheerful attitude is the trademark for the breed and one should settle for nothing less. This is a fantastic breed for the first time dog owner, or apartment dweller.

Common Ailments:

Allergies related to fleas or to food, however they are more often sensitive to a seasonal problem related to inhalants; Bichons are prone to dental problems; prone to bladder infections and kidney stones, patella (knee) luxation, ear infections and eye disease. Regular visits to the vet along with proper grooming care should help to minimize the possible illnesses, and maximize the life quality of the pet.

Grooming/Physical Needs:

Bichons are a significantly high-maintenance breed. They require regular grooming, which can be time consuming at home or expensive if delegated to a professional. He needs daily brushing due to the coat texture. To maintain the powder-puff appearance, extensive trimming, brushing and bathing are also on the list of requirments.

Intelligence, easily taught, willingness to please.

Bichon Frisé a family dog, who is often confused with a poodle, has an exceptional temperament, and loves to be an interactive member of the family.
