Here I will tell which breeds make excellent guard dogs. Remember, small dogs make really effective guard dogs. Some people really like guard dogs because they are brave and they do tell you if someone is around.
There are a few types of guard dogs. There are those guard dogs that bark to warn the owner that an intruder has come and after they have finished barking they start barking at the intruders. If the intruders aren't scared, these dogs won't do anything unless they want to try to stop the intruder really badly. These dogs are usually called watch dogs. In my opinion, these dogs are the ones that should be owned by people who want guard dogs because there is almost no chance that these dogs will kill the intruders.
There are those who attack the intruder if the intruder comes to close or doesn't stop in his tracks and retreats. These dogs might kill the person they are attacking or they might just injure them really badly. These dogs shouldn't be owned by people who just want guard dogs for fun because what if these dogs accidentally attack a family member that they haven't met before. They will be in trouble and so will you.
Note: Most dogs of the toy breeds would probably only bark which makes them watch dogs but still they can be called effective guard dogs because they are still guarding their owner in some way and believe me if they don't attack, they can bark. Barking is really intimidating especially since it is a really high pitched bark coming from a toy breed.

Yorkshire Terrier: Yorkshire Terriers are really effective guard dogs. For a little background information, Yorkshire Terriers are dogs from the toy breed. Yorkshire Terriers(also known as Yorkies)are little small dogs that have a non shedding feature. These dogs have a coat that hands elegantly on both sides of its body. These dogs bark a lot and will bark when somebody comes. These dogs are also really brave and some people think they don't know their own size. This feature makes them different from other toy breeds because they might attack the intruders. These dogs, in my opinion, will make excellent guard dogs.
Poodles: Poodles are really effective guard dogs as well. Poodles come in 3 different sizes. There are toy, miniature, and standard poodles. Poodles are dogs with a non shedding feature. They have wiry fur which needs to be groomed daily. Some people think poodles are gentle dogs but they also bark a lot but the toy and miniature poodles most likely won't attack. The standard poodle might attack the intruder, to protect its owner. Poodles are said to be the most intelligent dogs in the world, which means that they can be trained easily. This feature will allow Poodles will make excellent guard dogs.
Pomeranian: Pomeranians are little dogs that have beautiful fur. Pomeranians will also make excellent guard dogs because they also bark a lot. These dogs, like other members of the toy breed, most likely won't attack but the will warn the owner that there is an intruder.
Silky terrier: Silky Terriers are small little dogs that are just like a Yorkshire Terriers. The only difference is that the fur of the Silky Terrier reaches to its heels and doesn't grow past that part, while the Yorkshire Terriers's hair goes past its heels and right to the ground. These dogs will make excellent guard dogs because they are just like the Yorkshire Terriers who also bark a lot.
German Shepherd: German Shepherds are fierce dogs that can be really aggressive and that is why they make excellent guard dogs. These dogs have a thin coat of fur surrounding them and they have big jaws. These dogs will make any robber say sorry. These dogs should only be used by people who have something worth stealing that people are actually after. These dogs can also actually kill someone if they aren't trained to attack the intruder's arms or legs. German Shepherds are also used by police as police dogs because they are fierce and brave.
Rottweiler: Rottweilers are also fierce dogs that can be aggressive. These dogs have a thin coat covering their body. Rottweilers make excellent guard dogs. These dogs should also be used by people who have something worth stealing because these dogs can be powerful and hurt someone really badly. In other cases, they can also cause death and the owner will be in trouble.
Maltese: These dogs may look gentle, and they are, but they make excellent guard dogs. They will bark at intruders like all other members of the toy breeds but they basically inform their owner that there is an intruder. These little dogs have a non shedding feature and they have long flowing hair which should be groomed daily. Maltese are really playful little breeds of dogs. These dogs do tend to bark quite a lot. The Maltese would make an effective guard dog.
Doberman Pinscher: These dogs make great guard dogs. Dobermans are dogs that have deep, broad chest, and a powerful medium sized muscular body. These dogs have a coat of fur surrounding their body. Dobermans can be aggressive sometimes, and should only be used by a person who really needs a strong guard dog. They can also kill intruders and injure them pretty badly.
