The large rounded skull, pronounced occiput, long muzzle with the muzzle plane parallel the skull top, dropping down lips into loose flews, extremely pronounced dewlap and sad brown eyes gives the breed an extremely awesome look with a very kind and gentle expression. The big paws and the round hindquarters of this deep chested breed allow the Basset Hounds to move around easily without a bit of clumsiness. Remembering William Shakespeare's poetic description: "Ears which sweep away the morning due." What better way could that great man delineate that gorgeous creature than this?
The coat is short, hard and shiny, without any thumb rules concerning the colour combination, which is generally milk-white with prominent markings of either sandy or chestnut pigmentation. 11 - 15 inches high at the wither, the Basset Hounds can weigh between 45 - 65 pounds and can thrive well till 12 years of age, if maintained properly. These friendly, but a bit stubborn breeds are quite fond of children and have gentle temperament. Easily trainable, the Basset Hounds can become very obedient. Just trigger his excellent sense of smell through proper training... he can create magic! Remember his reflexes are a bit slow by nature though.
