Sometimes new pet owners are at a loss to know what to do when they get a pet that has come from an abusive home. It would be good to know if the animal was abused and how it was treated. After a while one can find out some details like what the language of instruction was used on the dog or how it was badly trained. Such was the case of a friend who found out that her pet was trained in French and not English and accustomed to beg at the table.
It helps to be very strict in applying the rules of the house so that animal does not beg for scraps at the table and unleash its temper there. At least tempers are then restricted to other areas of the house. Keeping food in the hand rolled up in a fist is one way to get the animal come and sniff the hand and then you can relax the hand and offer the food to the animals. This rule can be extended to get the pet to be gentle as you offer food. Training a dog where to stay on the house does help to arrange some kind of order otherwise he will always be in the kitchen begging for scraps or between your feet when you are cooking.
If the dog was purchased as a puppy and growls every time he sees a paper rolled, it is quite likely that he has been abused by the owner and perhaps hit with the paper. The best thing is not to do that in front of the dog. Dogs learn very quickly not wee or defecate in the home when they are puppies. All one has to do is show them what they have done and give them a warning without hitting them. Gradually the dog grows out of a bad habit as it becomes an adult but it takes consistence on the part of the owner. So a pet that is walked often is more likely to be healthier than one who is not because he gets to burn off extra calories just as a human would. The owner has to keep up the number of walks that the animal will do and avoid keeping it indoors for extensive periods of time. It helps to know how the pet was treated before you adopt him to see if he needs any special attention or training so that you can invite guests without risk that the dog becomes aggressive or that you can live comfortably.
