Short History:
In 1955 the CSSR the crossed a German Shepherd with a Carpathian Wolf, wich resulted in the Wolfdog. The experiment ascertained that the offspring of mating a male dog to a female wolf as well as vice versa could be cared for. The vast majority of the puppies from these mating possessed the genetic requirements to continue breeding.
In 1965 a plan for the expanded and deliberate breeding of this new breed was laid out. This was to combine the usable qualities of the wolf with the preferred qualities of the dog.
In 1982, the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, through a committee of the breeder's association of the CSSR, was formally recognized as the national breed. During the breeding process, the best breeding dogs got developed away from the Czech side of the line. This is due to Slovak breeders not being under strong pressure to produce particular hybrids for the army, as were the Czech breeders, and could work on unifying the external traits of the new breed.
The Vice-commander of the experimental home base or kennels, Major Frantisek Rosik, now the honorary president of the Slovak Club of Breeders of the Czechoslovak Wolfdog in Bratislava, without a doubt should have the utmost credit for the improvement of the breed.
