Your Personal Mission Statement

Everyone seems to want more out of life, but few people take the time to figure out what “more” means to them. Simply stated, however, when you know where you want to end up, it's a lot easier to figure out how to get there. Developing a personal mission statement is a great way of finding your way to becoming who you want to be.

Developing a Personal Mission Statement: 7 Questions to Consider

In business, a mission statement is developed to outline the purpose and values of the company. Similarly, many employment coaches encourage job seekers to develop a mission statement as a way of determining what the applicant wants out of a job. But a personal mission statement can have far more benefits.

Everyone seems to want more out of life, but few people take the time to figure out what “more” means to them. Simply stated, however, when you know where you want to end up, it's a lot easier to figure out how to get there. Developing a personal mission statement is a great way of finding your way to becoming who you want to be.

So, how do you start to develop your mission statement? Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What do you believe in?
  • What are your dreams?
  • What do you want your family to think about you?
  • What do you want to be remembered for?
  • What do you want your future to look like?
  • What changes do you need to make to go from where you are to where you want to be?
  • What do you believe is your destiny?

It's important to answer these questions too, not just to ask them. The more thought you put in to answering the questions and the more detailed that your answers, the closer you will be to creating a plan for achieving your goals.

Just as a business develops a mission statement to express its purpose, to motivate its employees, and to unite those involved in common goals, your personal mission statement should guide you. It should express who you are (and who you want to be). It should remind you of your goals, and should motivate you to keep becoming.
