Many of us keep clothes we don't wear. We have our own reasons for not wearing them. Maybe you hate the color or it doesn't look good on you. It could also be that you snatched it because it was on sale. Or it was a gift and you didn't like it. Whatever the reason, these clothes should not be sitting in your closet. You can do something so these would be put to good use. Here are some ideas:
Donate it to Charity
If you can't really take wearing those clothes, donate them to a charitable organization. These organizations welcome donations as these can be used for their charitable projects. It's a good way to clear your closet and help others at the same time.
Give away to relatives or friends
Your cousin or your best friend would probably not mind getting some of your stuff. If your best friend has expressed a liking to your clothes why not just give it to him/her? Maybe you have relatives who can't afford to buy your kind of stuff. They'd be happy to have them for free. Just don't make the mistake of giving your clothes to the person who gave it to you as a gift.
Update it
If you still keep your Grandma's dresses from the 1930's and can't make yourself part with it, why don't you just update its style? Fashion styles and designs often make a comeback after 20 or so years. Give it a little twist to make it more modern. You can check out fashion magazines for current styles. If the fabric of your Grandma's dress is still “in” today, then change the cut of the dress. You can ask the help of a seamstress on this, or better yet….
Learn to sew
When you know how to sew, it is easy for you to make adjustments on your clothes so that it'll fit you better. If you think your blouse is too long, all you have to do is measure, cut and sew the edge. Of course you might need a sewing machine for this. But I know a friend who sews by hand any adjustments she wants on her clothes.
Turn it into a bag
This can be done with old sweaters. The sleeves and the neckline are cut off. The bottom part of the sweater is sewn together and handles added to the top of the bag. This can also be done with denim skirts.
Hang clothes on a wall as a piece of art
Let's say you were given a Japanese Kimono as a gift but you don't feel like wearing it, you can hang it as it is on a wall or frame it and display in your living room. If your favorite dress was ruined by a stain and it has an interesting fabric design, you can cut off a portion, frame it and put it on a wall.
There are countless ways of recycling old clothes. Instead of adding up to the garbage in the world, make your old clothes useful. Happy recycling!
