We are all gifted in some way. Some of us are really good with people and relationships. Others artistic, patient, really wonderful with children and other such things too numerous to mention. Many of us have several gifts to call upon. One of my gifts is organization.
For many years I worked doing just that. My expertise was in office organization and I worked mainly with law offices. I would organize their office procedures and suggest methods to improve overall efficiency.
Some of the suggestions would be as simple as moving of a piece of office equipment, desk or other furniture. These simple changes would make for the smoother flow of work and in many cases save hours of wasted time.
Another small change perhaps would be the design of a new form to assist in a more accurate workflow process.
If your gift isn't organization and you are at a loss with a project and how to get it organized perhaps some of the tips suggested below will help. You will be surprised once you have applied these simple solutions to a problem at how well they work.
First things first. For your initial attempt at organizing start with a small project.
Take an overall look at the project. What do you want to organize? What is wrong with it now? What do you want to accomplish? Will it be worth your time?
Once these questions have been answered and you decide to do it. You need to set aside some time to accomplish it. Let's say you have decided you need to organize your kitchen. After all you have a large family to prepare meals for and you spend a great deal of time in the kitchen doing so. It seems like you are always standing over the stove.
Let's begin with the smallest area of the kitchen project. Are your cooking utensils located in a convenient place? The cooking spoons and spatulas are they in a drawer across the room from the stove? If so, perhaps a ceramic container on or near the stove would be a better place. Placing the utensils use side up, so you can see what does what will help too.
What about you're electric can-opener? Is it plugged in close to where the item will be cooked or used? If not, perhaps it would work better somewhere nearer the stove too.
Spices. We all use spices, right? Salt and pepper, garlic salt and so on. Are these kept in the right place? That is close to where they are used? Because I am organized my spices for the most part are on a turntable and in alphabetical order in a cupboard above my stove. That's probably a stretch for you, but it is what I do.
Do you have messy or cluttered countertops? Look around. Is there an appliance, sitting out that isn't used all that often? Perhaps it could go into a cupboard away from sight until needed.
What about the cupboard, full of rarely used coffee cups and glasses? Why not, toss out those really odd ones you don't use? Maybe you could sell them at your next garage sale or better yet donate to one of your favorite thrift stores.
What about your refrigerator door? Does it open the right way? If not, most of the refrigerators these days have the option of swinging either way. You can usually make this change in minutes.
The information above is meant to help you get started on your organization projects. Following these simple thought processes and taking some action will most likely help you organize anything you want organized. The kitchen being this writings subject is only a start. Once your kitchen is organized using the same thought process would help make you a better organizer. Once you have accomplished one organization project you will feel confident and want to try some more.
Your kitchen is organized now, right? I didn't say you would be a better cook. That is up to someone else passing on his or her gift. Happy organizing.
Take care.
