It seems that there are never enough hours in the day, but there are several ways that you can make yourself much more productive by increasing the number of hours you can use to accomplish the things you need to do and also by using that time more efficiently. Here are five simple ways that you can get more out of your day.
Multi-Task
Perhaps the most important think you can do to get more accomplished each day is to multitask as much as possible. There will be some times when activities require your full attention, but divide that attention whenever possible. Obviously, any commute is the perfect time to multitask, but there are other times when it can be useful as well. If all you do is use your morning drive or the time between classes to plan your day or think of how you are going to solve problems, you will be using your time better than most people. By focusing on specific problems (i.e. what you are going to write a paper about or what you are going to get your kids for Christmas) while you are waiting for an activity to begin or to arrive at your destination, you can save yourself time and energy later. Of course, there are many ways to multi-task. You could, for example, catch up on some reading in between commercials of your favorite television program instead of changing the channels.
Delegate
When possible, delegate tasks. Too many people try to micromanage their affairs. For example, if you write articles for Associated Content for money, you might ask your spouse to actually upload the articles for you. That saves you from the time consuming, yet simple task of doing it yourself. If you are a business owner with employees, ask your employees to do the simple tasks that eat up large chunks of your day. That is what they are there for.
Get up Early
It is essential to get up early if you want to accomplish a lot in your day. You cannot get much done if you sleep until noon every day. Furthermore, you can get more done if you wake up at five or six than if you wake up at eight. Try to wake up early and get those things done in the morning that keep you up at night. You will find that you have more energy to do them in the early morning. If you are not a "morning person," you might want to try waking up just a little bit earlier every morning. Set you alarm fifteen minutes sooner every morning. Before you know it, your body will be used to waking up early and it will not be as difficult any more.
Get Enough Sleep
The key to harnessing that energy in the morning is to get enough rest at night. I have tried to cut back the number of hours I sleep every night and have had some success at it. Some people simply need eight hours of sleep every night, however, so make sure you get enough rest. You will not get much done if you are exhausted and your work will be shoddy if you are about to fall asleep. Instead of making yourself stay up until a certain time to get everything done, go to bed when you are tired. You may have to pull the occasional all-nighter, but going to bed when you are sleepy is the key to getting a good night's rest. If you are sleepy when you go to bed, you will feel much more rested than if you push yourself to stay up too late or if you go to bed before you are tired.
Make a Schedule
Make a schedule every day in which you plan out as much of your day as possible. Things may come up to disrupt your schedule, but at least you have a plan in case it doesn't. Do not get frustrated if you get behind. Life happens. Instead, try to put blocks of time in your schedule where you can catch up if you need to. That will help you avoid planning a lot more than you could possibly do in one day.
