If you have a small room, or if you have a lot of stuff, you may be interested in ways to keep things organized without being a neat freak.
- If you can't afford to get a desk with many drawers, consider either : getting a cheap desk and then buying some drawers to put under it OR : getting a large plastic drawer cart so that you can put your stuff in the drawers, and put your desk items simply on the cart
- If you have an item that can double as something else, get rid of the something else. For example I do a lot of writing so I have writing tablets. I also don't have a mousepad. One day I found out paper from a writing tablet can make a great mousepad.
- Instead of buying cd-roms, dvd-roms, and flash drives, go invest in a 500 GB external hard drive. You can find many online for about 100$.
- Keep all of your wireless items in a box (maybe a shoebox or a cute treasure chest) in a convenient place. Since they're wireless there are no cables forcing you to keep them in cluttered places.
- Every 3 or so months go through your clothes. Whatever you think you'll never ever wear again, put it in a bag. You then have a choice : give it away or sell it all as a bundle online. Same for jewelry and accessories.
- Instead of lining up all of your books vertically (like a library would), go through your books to find out which ones you like least. Then make a section of horizontally stored books. This will allow you to store more books in a previous space. Ideally you should use books that have appx the same length and width.
- Try to find pens that come with an attached string (perhaps on its cap). This will allow you to tie them around your notebook and binder rings. This will make losing pens harder and you won't need to have a spare pen section on your desk. I'd also recommend attaching one to a wallet keychain as you never know when you'll need a pen.
- Make a box for things you haven't used in the past month. If in 6 months you still haven't used them, come up with something to do with them or throw them away. (Garage sale anyone?)
- Try to keep all of your desk items close. So printer ink and printer paper should be close to the printer.
- If you use two “offices” (your room and maybe the basement), instead of having duplicate items, get a basket. That way any small object you may use for both offices can be transported easily and there's no need to take any of them out of the basket except during usage.
- If you have a hard time remembering things, put a post in on your underwear drawer or on your mirror - whichever you use more. You're bound to notice it better than if you put it on a table.
