If you find that it is important to include, a lavish ski holidays in the Alps each winter, you can put it in your budget as long as you can afford it.

Once you've grown accustomed to budgeting, you may wonder how you got through all these years without one. A budget is a living; breathing document that develops as your situation changes. Think of it as a roadmap, which enables you to know the direction you want to go, but that gives you several options in how to get there. For example, you might be planning to buy a house in three years, and you are careful to put money aside for a down payment. Then you are involved in a car accident that puts you unemployed for six months. Your budget will likely to change that will postpone your down payment. But it should not prevent you to buy the house, the only thing that change is your budget priorities, which had to adapt to circumstances.

When you run a budget, you'll be able to answer these questions that you have asked in the past but have never been able to resolve conclusively.

  • Do I have enough income to cover debt payments?
  • Do I have enough money to cover tax payments quarterly?
  • Do I put aside enough to cover the Christmas gifts I want to give?
  • Is my social security and pension income sufficient to maintain my current lifestyle if I retire this year?
  • What size of mortgage payments can I afford?

Many of these issues continue to occur while you go through different stages of life, and you will finally be able to deal with them efficiently with proper decisions based on the information shown in your budget.
