As costs associated with driving continue to rise, looking for new ways to save money can be a challenge. Not only are gas prices surging, but everything from maintenance to insurance is also higher now than just a few years ago. How can you save money without drastically altering your lifestyle? Here are five of the best ways to save money on car insurance.

Review your policy

Call your insurance agent and set a time to talk about your coverage. Go over ever item that is covered and ask questions about how necessary certain coverage is based on your state's requirements and your driving record and history. Do you need low deductibles? How would raising your deductibles affect your rate? Are they figuring in your driving record? Your age? Your marital status and the number of vehicles you have insured? Ask about changes you can make that will lower your rate.

Combine your insured assets for a better rate

Ask your agent about price breaks for combining your auto policy with your homeowners or renters policy. If the break is significant, consider making the change.

Call six companies for quotes

At least each year or every six months, you should call several insurance companies and get quotes for your insurance coverage. This will ensure that you are getting the best rate possible for your needs. Once you have called for your quotes, then you should contact your insurance carrier to see if they can meet or beat the best quote you've received. If not, you should consider changing insurance companies to save money if the amount is considerable.

Take a driving class instead of a ticket

If you get a speeding ticket, see if it is possible to take a traffic course to keep the violation off your driving record. It will cost you some cash to take the course and several hours on a Saturday or some evening, but the money you will save by not paying more for car insurance will be worth it.

Wear your seatbelt

By lowering your risks as a driver, you will get the best rates on car insurance. Practicing safe driving habits will not only lower your risk, but will also increase your chances of survival if you do get into a car accident. Make sure that every time you get into a vehicle - whether in the driver's seat, passenger seat or the back seat, you are always buckled up. You should also insist that everyone in your vehicle does the same.

Saving money in a difficult economy requires that you use some creativity. First off, make sure you are only buying the coverage you need and can use, then make sure you're getting the best rate possible. By combining coverage and doing some research, you really can save money on car insurance.
