Shave Off Some Bills

The only way to inject more money into your budget is by either earning more or cutting bills. Here is a quick easy read on how to shave some bills off of your monthly bottom line.

Recently I had to implement some cost saving techniques due to the fact that my line of work is undergoing a little bit of a lag. I analyzed all of my bills and realized exactly where the fat had to be cut. Two of those items: cellphone and electric.

Cellphone

A contracted cellphone is definitely a luxury. I have been paying something like $200 a month for a cellphone that I barely use for the past two years. This is the first place anyone looking to cut bills should look. In my case, I had a Blackberry package plan that included internet on my phone. While it was amazingly convenient to grab my phone while on the road and look up the closest supermarket or 7-11, it was something I just didn't need-plus it was costly. Then I saw that I had a 2000 minute plan on my phone while I only used something like 500 minutes a month.

By cutting these features I managed to shave off half of my bill, and $100 per month. So when you are ready to get your bills down, take a close look at your cellphone plan first. If you are coming close to the end of your cellphone contract, maybe you should re-evaluate your carrier if they have pricing that is too high.

Electric

This one is a little more tricky, because sometimes it seems as if the electric bill can get out of hand without you even knowing about it. But it definitely can be controlled.

First, monitor your electric usage for a 24 hour period by noting your meter in the morning before you leave, and then finding out what it has moved to by the next day at the same time. This way, you can see what your daily electric usage is. Then, take a look at what was on in the house during that 24 hour period. For example: the refrigerator, lights, television(s), and computers. You will then be able to see what can be shut off during the day.

After you switch off these items, then do the meter watch for another 24 hour period to see how much of a difference it makes. A simple calculation times 30 will give you your estimated electric bill for the month. It may sound tedious, but this practice can save hundreds of dollars a year. You can also do this practice with your gas bill.

We don't have to be held slaves to Corporate America when it comes to our bills. Let's fight back! By using our heads, we can get our bills down to reasonable and more manageable levels.
