Seven Ways to Cut Your Existing Bills

We're always looking for ways to cut back on our bills, so here's a list of ways you can do that without feeling the loss of life.

Everyone is looking for ways to save money and make their hard-earned dollars stretch further. Listed below are seven ways to cutback on current bills.

  1. Check your car insurance and homeowners insurance policies. Raise your deductible on both. If you have a $250 deductible on your homeowners policy chances are if have to make a home repair, you'll do them without filing a claim- because this could cause you to have higher premiums. Raise your deductible to $500, $750 or $1,000. You can cut your premium payments sometimes by as much as 15-percent.
  2. For your car insurance policy, if you have vehicles that are at least eight years old and they're paid for in full- try dropping your full coverage down to PLPD with Compensation. You can save about 12-percent off your premiums. Just like your homeowners policy- raise your deductible.

Finally, shop around. You don't have to take the first quote you get.

  3. Cut back on satellite and cable stations. If you have premium movie channels it can cost you anywhere from $9 and up for those channels a month. Chances are you only watch recently released movies once even though they're broadcasted daily on the channels. Plus you can rent the movie(s) from your local library for free.

  4. Cut your grocery bill by either using coupons for name brand items or buying store brand equivalents when you can. Check your cupboards before heading to the store and comparison shop. Some stores (especially the larger nationwide chains) accept a competitors' sale price.

  5. Stop buying bottles water and get a water purifier for your kitchen faucet. IN the long run you can save hundreds of dollars a year. Compare how much tap water costs per gallon- see you water bill- versus how much it costs for every 12-ounce bottle of water. You'll be amazed.

  6. Have your electric company come out and do a meter inspection. Also ask the company if there's a reduced cost for power usage during off-peak times.

  7. Check your telephone bills and call the company to ask what specials they have and are offering. There's a great competition for your patronage.
  8. Monitor your telephone usage and eliminate extra services not being used daily.

  9. Prescription drug coverage is getting better with nationwide pharmacies offering generic medicines for $4 and $6 but what about the medicines not covered under these specials
  10. There's a fabulous program through Talk Show Host Montel Williams website (Personal experience- my husband has multiple sclerosis and his medication costs about $1,275 every month. My insurance covers all but $60- my deductible. We belong to the pharmaceutical company's participation group and we get the medicine- delivered to our door every three months- for $15 a month.)

nice thoughts. I just wish I had time from working both my jobs to call the insurance people and the telephone company. Maybe I should. I can only imagine that my home owners policy needs to be updated too.

I already do #1, I don't have cable TV, I buy store brands & use coupons & I NEVER go without a list,I have GOT to start doing #4,just did #6 last week,I can only afford generic medicine WHEN I DO make it to a doctor. I make sure they prescribe something that can be generic or I can't get it.

I wish the government would step up...that's why we elected them. We're in a recession- but not from the lips of George W. Bush- if this keeps up we'll be in a depression before we realize it

Gas prices hot the $126 mark today. When will it end. Cutting back is the only way to survive anymore. It's survival of the fittest (richest). I recently got rid of our landline telephone and all we have is the cell phone. That immediately cut out about $70 a month.
