Live on Less 2: Transportation

Using your own energy to get around.

So much of our lives are in the car going here, going there. Nowadays it takes a lot of money to keep the car running. (Maintenance and gas) Many people can easily spend up to half their paychecks on just gas for a week. If you work in the same town you live in, there are some other ways of getting around.

Bicycles

Even in winter, you can ride a bike around some nice days. Here in the town I live in, there are people who do just that. Mainly it is the only way around for them. You need a good three speed or faster bicycle, a bike lock and a bicycle helmet, which I recommend. (any bicycle lock will do.) If you are going to work, or just around town, find something to lock the bike to…a pole, a fence, you want the bike there when you are ready to leave. (if it is work you are going to, you might get a good backpack if you have papers for the office or anything else.) For the women who are in office work, I might suggest wearing slacks or jeans when riding a bike to work, (don't forget to throw in a skirt in the backpack, to change later if you wish) You can dress up your upper body on a bicycle. Always arrive a little early so you can change when you get to the office.

If your using the bike to pick up a few things at the store, you will need some light-weight rope (or light-weight chain), and a kiddie wagon. We all remember our little red wagons, don't we? Get one long piece of rope, which you can see fit as to how long you want it. Bring the ends together, take the looped end through the handle of the wagon and bring the two ends of the rope through the loop, the rope should then wrap around the handle. Now, tie each end of the rope to the bike, under the seat. This way it will not interfere with the peddles or the back wheel. Now you're ready go pick up a few things, just make sure what you get can fit in the wagon! One added benefit, is the exercise you get.

Public Transportation

Almost every good sized city has public transportation in one form or another, if it be busses, taxis, or carpools. Either of these, you just ride … As you ride you can read a book or work on that crossword puzzles before you get to work. Then there is walking. The best time to walk is when your not in a hurry to get someplace. When was the last time you just walked too see things you don't normally see when your in a hurry to get someplace? Is there something on the way to work for example, that you been meaning to check out, but just hav'nt had the time. Take a walk, find out what it is, go inside and look around. You might be surprised at what you find.
