How to Shop on a Limited Income

Some good places to find cheap clothes and household items for anyone living on a budget.

Goodwill Stores

People sometimes don't realize that Goodwill stores are open for everyone to shop at. They not only have used and new clothes but they have really cool household items too… perfect for the college student just getting out on their own. Not only do they have cheap items, but the nearly 83% revenues they make are used to fund education and career services and other community programs.

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is similar to Goodwill, not only do they provide cheap clothes and household items; they are also helping out the community by donating revenues to help the unfortunate.

Local Thrift Stores

What an awesome place to find really nice and expensive clothing. Most of the clothing these stores carry are brand new, with the tags still on the garment! Many thrift stores have really good sales. A local thrift store in my area have what is called a “Grab Bag Event” where you are given a shopping bag and you can put as many clearance items as possible into the bag for a certain amount, usually about $10.00. What a deal!

Garage Sales

You know the old saying, “Other peoples garbage is your treasure.” Spring cleaning means spring shopping! Check out your classified section and find as many garage sales as possible, you're bound to find some unique treasures. Happy shopping!

These are good suggestions. When I started student teaching I needed to dress professionally, but did not have the budget to buy all new clothes. I bought all new clothes at Good Will and everyone complimented me on them. The best part was that I hardly spent anything. It is also good to mention that donating items to these sites can save you big money at tax time.

I find these places fun to shop at. It is like treasure hunting, you never know what you will find. I have found some pretty amazing things in such places.
