How to Save Money on Groceries: Maximize Leftovers

With the price of food rising at the fastest pace in over 20 years, many people are looking for ways to save money on groceries. This looks at how to maximize your leftovers to reduce food costs.

Think Ahead

With careful planning you can maximize your leftovers to reduce your food costs. There are 21 meals in a week, but with careful planning you won’t have to cook 21 meals from scratch. Ask yourself what you can cook that can create leftovers that can be reheated to produce a few other meals?

Some Ideas

One thing I like to do is to cook a large ham or roast beef on Sunday. That way I will have some leftover meat that can be used to make sandwiches on Monday and Tuesday. I also like to cook a large pot of potatoes. That way I will be able to quickly fry some potatoes for breakfast to be eaten with eggs and bacon.

Some Foods Don't Make Good Leftovers

Other foods don’t make good leftovers and in this case you should only cook what you can eat right away. One food that comes to mind is oatmeal. Do you really want to eat leftover oatmeal? Trust me; fried leftover oatmeal is not that yummy!
