I lived in allowance from government and work 2 days a week and almost getting as much money as full time worker would get. But, I have learnt that it was not about how much money you get but about spending less money.
In Australia, usually allowance comes with concession card which you can use for about anything like buying travel ticket as cheap as $ 2.50 with that you can travel everywhere all day .And Every Tuesday night is a movie night in Sydney, You can buy movie ticket for cheap (8.50$) normally it cost $15 any other day. With the concession you have you pay cheaper (11$) except Tuesday night.
Also there are lots of cheap shops in Australia where they sell everything as cheap as 2$.I usually bought my shampoo, soaps and toothpaste for 2$ from the shops run by organization which working to help poor people but it also open to public such as Salvation Army and St. Vincent Depaul. For groceries I usually bought that in ALDI .Lowest for price compare than any other supermarket in Sydney.
I have been able to save my money in what I called ING DIRECT . The interest I got is 6% per annum, good thing about ING DIRECT , there is no fee for anything whatsoever you can withdraw or deposit money anytime for free
