Hints for Dealing with Debt Collectors

When the collector comes knocking, emailing or phoning us for a delinquent debt, there are things we can do about it.

Most of us have debts so some of this information should be valuable for nearly everyone. Few of us live totally debt-free. Unless we are quite overblessed with cash, some of us occasionally get behind on one or another debt. This is usually a very short-term situation for most of us. If it is a potential long-term problem, we need to do our part to maintain a good credit record and keep from becoming a bad-debt person.

Although it may be embarrassing for us, we should contact the company that we owe money to. It helps them if they know we have some type of situation that requires a late payment. They will probably record that information on our record within their own accounting department. This should always, always, always be the first step in avoiding future credit problems.

It really does pay for us to initiate the contact. Before the company even sends us some type of reminder, we need to take the lead and contact them. Use the telephone, use email if they have a web site, use the postal service or go to see them in person. Any of these actions can bring some type of response from the company to let us know that they are aware. Sometimes, this first step is the only one needed. At times, the company may suggest measures to help with our immediate financial crunch and to keep us from becoming a negative in their accounting books.

If the company contacts us before we let them know of our problem, they will be assuming that we may have overlooked the past-due payment. Usually, a friendly reminder is sent to us about it. If we ignore those reminders, the company begins to wonder why we do not respond. That is the beginning of bad credit news for us.

Foreclosures, repossessions and nasty letters from lawyers about an unpaid bill are quite unpleasant. Any of those can bring about resentment on our part. Then, it is even harder than before to have positive interaction with the company we owe money to.

If it gets close to those negative circumstances, the chances of having mutually beneficial relations with the company are slimmer. Still, in order to save our credit rating and keep from losing some valued possession, it is wise to acknowledge that you were too embarrassed to contact them.

We can suggest some ideas to our creditor. He may decide to become cooperative since we make suggestions to save our account from foreclosure. We can suggest that the creditor allow us to make one or two payments of the interest only, allowing the principal to remain stable for the month or two. That way, the creditor will get extra interest payments for allowing you time to recover financially.

We could ask the creditor to refinance the debt, allowing us to make lower payments than we had originally arranged. Again, the creditor can make some gain by being cooperative with such an idea.

Asking the creditor if he has suggestions for our immediate circumstances is also a good idea. The creditor may have some backup plan for people who get themselves in too deeply.

Financial arrears are negatives both for us as consumers and for the companies who give us credit. We want to be current on our debts. Our creditors also want us to be up-to-date on our payments. The creditor gave us credit because he wanted to make a sale for profit. If we do not pay our debt to him, he has extra expense instead of extra income.

Although it makes us feel ashamed whenever a bill becomes delinquent, we should contact the creditor before he contacts us. This should be our first response to a delinquency.
