Getting Our Money's Worth

Sale 50% off, Buy one Take 1. Very alluring indeed, but how many times did we buy for the simple reason that it's cheap. Then when we go home, we realized "Hey, we don't need this stuff at all".

I guess almost every one of is guilty of this sort one way or another. Ever been to an “Eat-all-you-can” joint? The mentality is always about “getting our money's worth”. Sometimes we are already full-to-the-brim but thinking that we want to get our money's worth, we end up eating more than our stomach can handle. We almost always go beyond our comfort zone. As a result, we end up feeling bloated and having heart-burns (Hey, some even resort to throwing up in the bathroom then coming back for more - I tried that a couple of times during my teens, it doesn't work at all because you feel different coming out and there's that sour taste in your mouth the 2nd time around. The question here is “Did we really got our money”s worth? A lot of times, we are so focused on the quantity of food we eat that we forget our own physical comfort. Finally for a nightcap we ended up buying anti-acid medicine to ease our discomfort. Whew, we humans are something else.

Here's another example. Sake 50% off, Buy 1 Take 1. Very alluring indeed! But wait, how many times did we buy these items for the simple reason that they are coming in cheap? How many times did we bring them home only to realize that “Hey, we don't need this stuff at all.” Look who's talking! I myself had been involved with so many of these instances. Maybe that's why I ended up writing this piece because I myself am guilty with this count numerous times. So what's the normal ending here? We end up giving some of our stuffs away (which is really fine) to accommodate this new “just-bought-because-it's-cheap-sale-item”. But what if we are not the giving-away type? Simple, we end up with a house stuffed with things, furniture and items that are just crowding the place.

Here's another one, we pay for a particular service or employee. Seeing them finish early is something we can't accept (hey, I am paying you), so even though they obviously have nothing else to do, we forced feed them with job-assignments just so we can get our money's worth on their services to the final centavo and final minute.

Is this a psychological problem? Or are we just so focused on the material/monetary value of everything that almost all the time, we have to get our money's worth to be satisfied and happy? Yet the bottom line question is “Are we really happy when we overeat, then go home feeling bloated and having difficulty breathing? Are we really happy when we buy things we don't need at all (just because they are cheap)?

Are you one of these types ?

If yes, you're actually in good company. But just because you're in good company doesn't make it right, right?
