Eight Ways to Save on Gas

With gas prices going up, there's no telling when we will get a break. Here are a few tips for those of us who haven't bought a Hybrid yet.

  1. Cool it! Running your air conditioner can actually lower your fuel economy by about 15%. Make sure when you use your a/c, your windows are tightly sealed, this will decrease the air resistance against your car when you're on highway. When you're in traffic, shutting your a/c off and opening the windows, this will lower your fuel use.
  2. Tighten your gas cap. This will prevent gas vapors from escaping your tank.
  3. Quit riding your brakes! Resting your foot on the break pad actually creates a drag on your car, causing you to use more gas, not to mention you burn through break pads when you do this.
  4. Stay inflated. Make sure your tires have enough air in them. Underinflated tires actually wear faster, and are huge fuel wasters.
  5. How much junk is in your trunk? Clean the crap out of the trunk. The excess stuff weighs your car down, and causes you to burn more gas. For every 250 lbs you're losing about a gallon of gas.
  6. It's tempting, and you think it's helping, but don't top your car off with gas. You end up spilling some of it anyway and those extra cents actually add up.
  7. Keep it up! Make sure you're giving your car regular oil changes, and timely maintenance, not only is this going to prolong the life of your car, but the fresh oil actually makes your car waste less gas.
  8. Lead-footers not welcome! The faster you drive the more gas you're going to use. Makes sense doesn't it? If you drive the speed limit you're actually going to save around 2 miles per gallon as opposed to driving 10 miles over the speed limit.
