Budget Tips

Tips for saving money.

1. Used bookstores are a fabulous place to buy books. Not only is the selection better, you can find out of print and rare books in these stores, and you pay under five dollars apiece for the books sold here compared to spending $10, $30 or even $40 for a new book at a regular bookstore.

2. My favorite money saving vaccuum?? A bagless, liftoff canister vaccuum that does carpets and bare floors. You have to empty the canister out as you clean but you never have to buy bags.

3. Once a week, empty out your wallet or change purse, take out a handfull of change and put it in a jar. When the jar gets full, wrap the coins and take them to the bank and put them in your savings or chequing account. It may be just change, but it adds up and fattens up your bank account.

4. Instead of throwing plastic and glass bottles out, including liquor and soft drink bottles, take them to a recycling center where you can get money back in exchange for bringing them in.

5. Instead of buying "brand name" groceries, buy generic or no name items instead whenever you can. They are the same quality and sometimes even taste and or work better than the so called superior brand name products. You can save a lot of money this way.

6. Buy clocks that run on batteries instead of ones that need to be plugged in.

7. Invest in high quality bed linens. Cheap duvets and comforters won't keep their shape after a couple of years of use and washing. Cheap sheets will wear out faster too then more expensive bed linens. If you spend a little money to buy good, high quality bedding, they will last you for a much longer time compared to their cheaper counterparts. They are truly an investment in your comfort and your finances.

8. Invest in good quality clothing. Clothing that is too cheap will not last very long, and won't stand up very well under frequent washings. Clothing that is made of durable, quality fabrics and is constructed well, will last you for years and still look good.

9. Buy yourself a digital camera. This can save you alot of money. Processing film or having prints made to send to family and friends can get very expensive. With a digital camera, you save money on buying rolls and rolls of film. If you and your family have a computer, you can take your pictures with your digital camera, connect your camera to you computer, transfer the pictures onto your hard drive where you can then edit the pictures and delete any that you don't like and then send them to your loved ones by e-mail. It doesn't cost a thing, and they get the pictures immediately.
