Television
Many people tend to leave their T.Vs on even when they're not there. Short trips to the bathroom or kitchen, or even attending a doorbell ring are a few times when televisions are on unnecessarily. Especially if you have a bigger sized screen, you're actually consuming a lot of electrical energy and thus you end up with a heavier electricity bill. Analysis show that 20% (or possibly more) of electricity consumed by American homes is by the use of televisions being on. Cut down the use of television viewing and especially when its on and the couch is empty.
Lights
A lot of people leave room lights on even when no one is there. This is a substantial waste and abuse of electricity and should not occur in your house anymore. Also, many people often leave outside security & garden lights on even in the daytime. Avoid this.
Fans
In summers, its natural to run the air-conditioner and/or ceiling fan(s). Thats pretty much okay, but what about when the fan is on and no one is there? For an A/C I can understand that when you come back home in an hour, you want the house cool. But what benefit do you get having a fan on and no one there? None right?
Screens
Every night before sleeping, many people shut down their computers to save some electricity and to keep the system in better condition. Though if you don't want to do this, simply turning the screen off or putting it on stand-by will save you a few extra bucks every month. Screens are actually one of the biggest electricity-consuming products.
Energy Savers
Yeah you will be paying more at first, but your investment is bound to own up. Energy savers as compared to ordinary fluorescent or incandescent lights are much better in terms of electricity consumption and output ratio. Try slowly replacing all your interior and exterior lights with energy savers and I'm sure you won't regret it.
Huge Screens
Its like driving a big SUV. The bigger the car, the bigger the engine and the bigger the cost. Its factual that bigger sized cars almost always consume more fuel as compared to their smaller counterparts. Same with T.Vs. A 108" screen will indefinitely consume much more electricity as compared to an equal quality 29". No you don't have to squint your eyes viewing a 12" box, but as opposed to a 67", how about a nice 42?
There are a lot of ways to save electricity, and of course many which I have not mentioned. That doesn't mean these are the only ways. For tips on how to save fuel/gasoline and how to save money, check this out.
