This is a very helpful guide on how to save some money while shopping for gifts.
Make a list of who you're buying for and set limits for each recipient
Ask each person you are buying for what they would like by getting a first, second, and third choice from each person so you can pick the gift that falls within your budget for them.
Know what you're going to buy before you hit the mall/store/shopping center. If you wander aimlessly, you might end up buying more than you set out to buy.
Doing some online research of where you can buy certain gifts for the least amount of money can save you lots of it
Do not feel guilty if you can't buy everyone and their grandmother a gift for the holidays. Anyone outside of your immediate family (and sometimes even individuals inside of your immediate family) would love a card.
Consider making a gift. This is very personable and comes from the heart; people will appreciate this more than you know.
Conduct online research for more expensive gifts (especially technology). It is very likely that there is a company out there that will sell it for cheaper (even when shipping is added) than a traditional "brick and mortar" store.
If someone from whom you did not expect a gift from buys you a gift, do not rush out and buy them a gift out of guilt. If you must get them something, make sure it is something inexpensive. Remember, this is an unexpected expense that you did not account for on your list (see number 1).
Try everything in your power not to use a credit card
Make sure you eat before going out to shop. Buying meals while your out can get very pricey.
Map out your shopping trip so you don't cover the same ground more than once. Try to come up with a sequential list of stores you will hit and put them in order geographically. If it helps, you can actually print out a map and highlight the routes you will take so that you don't leave one area of town just to come back to it later. This will save you lots of gas, which in turn will save you lots of money.
Make sure you get plenty of rest, hydrate, and nourish your body. You will be surprised on how it sharpens your decision making. If you are hungry or tired, you might end up buying "anything" just to get out of the store.
Best wishes.
Sincerely,
-Liane Schmidt.
