10 Areas in the Dollar Store That Can Save You Money

After shopping at the Dollar Store for a while here is my list of preferences that can actually save money.

If you want to stretch your dollar, you have to know what to buy at the Dollar Store. Not everything is worth the money you paid for. Check over the products carefully, and compare prices. Here is a recommendation for 10 things to buy at the Dollar Stores.

  1. Gift Wrap

Dollar stores have a wide variety of gift wraps, from bags in all sizes, to roll of paper, to decorative tissues. In this section, you will also find decent greeting cards for all occasions.
  2. Party Wear

You can get helium balloons, invitations, party favors, table cloth, and paper plates for a dollar each. There is where you can stretch your dollar since you can save at least 50% off regular price at other stores.
  3. Stocking Stuffers

Brand name candies like Peg, Snicker, Star Burst, and little toys are great for Christmas season, and Easter basket.
  4. Cleaning products

Whether your cleaning products are brand names or not, you are still can get your house clean with less known names. Sometimes, you can find the same products at the dollar stores as in Wal-Mart or K-Mart.
  5. Home Accents

You will find candles, glass jars, silk flowers, and picture frames for a much cheaper price. They are usually 70% less. Sometimes you can even find brand name yarn such as Fun Fur, Confetti, and others from Lion Yarn Company.
  6. Storage Containers

If you ever need plastic containers like the Tupperwear products, you can find them in your local dollar stores. Obviously, they are not Tupperwear, but they serve their purpose very well.
  7. Craft and School Supplies

This is a section where you can find books, pens, pencils, school supplies, and craft supplies. They also carry cross-word puzzle, magazine, inspirational CD, DVD, activity books, and coloring books.
  8. Toiletries

You can find a great variety of brand name product in this section from Beck shampoo, conditioner, to Barbasol shaving cream, to deodorant and soap. They also have Goody's hair combs and brushes.
  9. Batteries

You can find Panasonic and Sunbeam batteries for cheap in the dollar stores. A package of eight AA or 4 D batteries is only a dollar. Just check the expiration dates on the package and it will save you a bit of money.
  10. Kitchen Supplies

Kitchen utensils, dish cloth, sponges are good buys at dollar stores. They also have colanders, Brillo pads, and scour pads.

There are a lot more things in the Dollar Stores that should not be overlooked. These are just my own buying preferences. If you see something worthwhile, buy them, and stock them up because they could be all gone the next day.

Icy, this is a wonderful article! The Dollar Store is a great place to shop and your list makes it easy to know what the best products are to buy. I wish we had such stores when my kids were home and going to school. What a difference it would have made for a single mom buying kid's back to school supplies.

Great job!

Good list, Icy. We don't have dollar stores here, they are called pound stores (about $2), so we pay almost twice what you do per item!!!!

I miss the Dollar Store :( or the 99 cents store... there's one of those, too (or there used to be) in Southern California... here we have the "Dollar Store" but it's really the 5 shekel store (about $1.50 at this point)

Lovely post and pics

This is a good list. I should go to the dollar store and get some wrapping paper. Seeing your pic reminded me that I need more paper. It's way cheaper to get it at the dollar store.

Another excellent list. Sometimes I have found good items of clothing at our local dollar store for a buck. We have also bought entire sets of soup mugs and coffee cups. For our Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes we buy the toothbrush/toothpaste combination packs that we sometimes find there. Great photos to accompany your article!

I agree ;) Last year I was buying christmas gifts for my little cousin, and with little kids they forget what they got a couple days after christmas. So, I got a lot of smaller stuff in the dollar stores. More stuff for him to open ;) My Mom buys a lot of her cleaning supplies at our local dollar store. They work just the same ;)

i own a dollar store and the only way to stay in business is if the comunity suports it. those cleaning items you talk about can cost at times .95cents to over a dollar and so can many other items in the store. so always remember that dollar stores dont have that big of a mark up.when you go in there and buy just one item that really sucks. check and see how much lease is and youll understand.thousands and thousands of items have to be sold a month to pay lease, employees etc. oh and you have to restock the store.i can have 100 customers for the day and only bring in 200 dollars. that is way in the red.
