Where is Home?

Homesick living in a foreign country? What to expect in the first months?

Home is the place where you can relax, unwind, do whatever you fancy and above just be who you really are. After a hard day's work most people welcome the thought of going back home.

Now picture this, you are in a foreign country which you should now call home. You have no friends or family, are living in the suburbs, staying with strangers, unemployed and the weather is depressing, a far cry from the sunny hometown you come from.

These are some things to expect:

No matter what you will never get used to the weather

Complaining about the weather is the national pastime, so forget getting used to the weather. But you do have to be careful to dress properly without looking like a mummy though.

Appearances do matter

Forget about the “beauty comes from inside” theory. You have to look the part: invest in good makeup, keep in touch with fashion, be trendy and always look perfectly polished. The keyword here is presentation, don't look like a refugee.

It is ok to talk to strangers

Your parents were wrong on that one. You have to smile, talk about the weather, share jokes and be friendly to perfect strangers you meet in the mall or on the street.

No place to call home

It will take a while to have your own place to call home. In the meantime if you are sharing accommodation expect adjusting your habits:

  • Wake up at the same time or before everybody else,
  • Eat at the same time,
  • Find a convenient time slot to use the bathroom and no singing in the shower,
  • Behave and get along with your roommates, this is trick

Money and power

Nothing is for free, not even that smile the sales representative gave you at the store. Almost everything has hidden costs and everyone is trying to sell you something. It is a vicious circle, the more you have, the more you will want.

Prove yourself at all times

If you were not born in this country, expect to have to prove yourself everywhere. Your education, your background, your credit history have to be rebuilt from scratch.

All things said if you survive all that, then you have found yourself a place to call home.
