Moving can be really stressful. There are so many things to do and it is easy to feel really overwhelmed. One of the most important things I think that everyone should do before they move, or even before they put their home on the market, is have a garage sale. You want to clear your home of excess clutter before you put your home on the market so that your house feels more spacious and appealing to potential buyers.
The best thing for you to do is to spend a day or two sorting through everything in your home and find everything that you do not use, or items that you may not want to move with you to your new location. You really cannot be selective because you want to be able to get rid of a lot of things. My suggestion to you would be to get rid more than you really want to. You will never sell everything at the garage sale, and at the end of the sale, if you still want to keep it you can.
Price your items to sell. You are never going to get what you paid for originally for the item. You do not know how many garage sales I have been to when they prices are sky high and I just walked away from them. Apparently, this concept is hard to understand. The whole purpose of a garage sale is to get rid of the things you do not need. Pricing can take a lot of time, but it is important to put something on the item, because there is a lot of people who do not see a price, they may be interested, but will walk away because you may be with someone else.
Have your garage sale three days in a row. Make a lot of signs to post up everywhere in your neighborhood. You want to know as many people know about it, thus you will have more traffic and more sales. Another mistake that people make is that they only have the sale one day, and when your neighbors see the sign, they may have something going on that day and will have to miss the sale. You want to give the people every opportunity to get to the sale. The best days to have a garage sale is Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Once your garage sale has ended, you must figure out what you want to do with the leftover things. This would be the time that you could pull out things that you may want to keep. If anything is really dirty or may be broken, throw it in the trash. If the other items do not fit in this category, my suggestion would be to box it up and donate it to charity. If there is nothing wrong with it, someone else less fortunate will make great use of it, rather than throwing it in the trash.
Garage sales can be a lot of work but will be well worth it. You can get rid of things that are of no use to you, as well as you will make some cash and clean up your home. You will have a lot less to pack when it comes time to move. This is a win - win situation, so I think that it is a necessity.
